Systematic comparison of a biotrickling filter and a conventional filter for the removal of a mixture of hydrophobic VOCs by Candida subhashii
PublicationThis work systematically compared the potential of a conventional fungal biofilter (BF) and a fungal biotrickling filter (BTF) for the abatement of a mixture of hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Candida subhashii was herein used for the first time, to the best of the author's knowledge, to remove n-hexane, trichloroethylene, toluene and α-pinene under aerobic conditions. C. subhashii immobilized on polyurethane foam...

Enhancing seismic performance of steel buildings having semi-rigid connection with infill masonry walls considering soil type effects
PublicationUnpreventable constructional defects are the main issues in the case of steel Moment-Resisting Frames (MRFs) that mostly occur in the rigidities of beam-to-column connections. The present article aims to investigate the effects of different rigidities of structures and to propose Infill Masonry Walls (IMWs) as retrofitting strategy for the steel damaged buildings. A fault or failure to meet a certain consideration of the soil type...

Derandomizing random walks in undirected graphs using locally fair exploration strategies

Improving Thermal Insulation Properties for Prefabricated Wall Components Made of Lightweight Aggregate Concrete with Open Structure
PublicationPorous concrete is commonly used in civil engineering due to its good thermal insulation properties in comparison with normal concrete and high compression strength in comparison with other building materials. An extremely porous concrete, called ‘lightweight aggregate concrete with open structure’ (LAC), is used in some German plants to produce prefabricated wall components. They are used mainly in hall buildings, e.g. supermarkets....

An approach for estimation of water wall degradation within pulverized-coal boilers
PublicationThe main aim of this paper is to estimate the lifetime of water walls of pulverized-coal boilers at nominal conditions as well as after degradation of water tubes. An approach for a pulverized-coal chamber degradation process has been formulated based on operational and experimental data. This model was formulated using on-line state monitoring of a pulverized coal burner with aim of preventing the fireplace screens from high degradation...

Membrane model of human abdominal wall. Simulations vs. in vivo measurements
PublicationThe study presents a methodology of defining a numerical model of human abdominal wall based on the experimentally registered data of the abdomen geometry due to variations of the intraabdominal pressure. The abdominal wall is modelled here as a simple homogeneous membrane structure made of linear orthotropic material The displacements registered during the increase of pressure are compared with the re-sults of the model static...

Global sensitivity analysis of membrane model of abdominal wall with surgical mesh
PublicationThe paper addresses the issue of ventral hernia repair. Finite Element simulations can be helpful in the optimization of hernia parameters. A membrane abdominal wall model is proposed in two variants: a healthy one and including hernia defect repaired by implant. The models include many uncertainties, e.g. due to variability of abdominal wall, intraabdominal pressure value etc. Measuring mechanical properties with high accuracy...

Static and dynamic modelling blow- out type trauma of orbital wall
PublicationAuthors of the paper present initial results of finite element analysis of a blow-out type trauma of orbital wall. The research is liked with laboratory tests for the Young’s modulus of bones evaluation. In the finite element analysis the neighbourhood of orbital wall is modelled by triangle thin shell finite elements. In the paper results of nonlinear static and transient dynamic analysis (including damping) are compared. The...

Material Identification of the Human Abdominal Wall Based On the Isogeometric Shell Model
PublicationThe human abdominal wall is an object of interest to the research community in the context of ventral hernia repair. Computer models require a priori knowledge of constitutive parameters in order to establish its mechanical response. In this work, the Finite Element Model Updating (FEMU) method is used to identify an heterogeneous shear modulus distribution for a human abdominal wall model, which is based on nonlinear isogeometric...

Microencapsulation of fish oil – determination of optimal wall material and encapsulation methodology
PublicationFor the first time, we present a meta-analysis of experimental and literature data to determine which microencapsulation methodology, and which wall material are best suited to protect fish oil. Our analysis covered a period of several decades of research (1984–2018). The analysis was conducted on 196 literature data-points, and 16 data-points determined experimentally for this publication. PLS regression was used to determine...

Tensile and flexural moduli for human orbital wall bones – comparative study
PublicationThe main aims of the current research were: (1) to analyze in detail the tensile modulus and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of orbital wall bones separately for the left and right orbit of the same cadaver and (2) to compare the obtained results with a flexural modulus of the left and right orbit reported earlier by A. C. van Leeuwen et al. [14]. A set of 54 specimens of orbital superior and/or medial walls harvested from 16 human...

Evaluation of Hilbert transform filter performance

Modelling of vibrations of a liquid filled tank
PublicationPrzeprowadzono analizę teoretyczną i numeryczną zbiorników długich i krótkich wypełnionych całkowicie lub częściowo cieczą. Wyznaczenie obciążeń hydrodynamicznych dotyczy bezpośrednio wytrzymałości konstrukcji samego zbiornika, a przez to pozwala określić wytrzymałość konstrukcyjną całego kadłuba. Szczególne wymagania stawiane są zbiornikom do przewozu cieczy radioaktywnych, gdyż należy zapewnić bardzo wysoki stopień bezpieczeństwa...

The Farrow structure for the Hilbert transform filter

Smart Cities Concept - Readiness of City Halls as a Measure of Reaching a Smart City Perception
PublicationThe article presents a proposal for a new approach to the assessment of Smart Cities: testing the readiness of city halls to a Smart City. The approach is the result of two-year studies involving ten major city halls. Readiness is compared with the previously used Smart City assessment methods: rankings or ISO standards. The relationship between readiness and organization maturity was also presented. The key role of city halls...
