Mobile Activity Plan Applications for Behavioral Therapy of Autistic Children
PublicationThis paper concerns technological support for behavioral therapy of autistic children. A family of tools dedicated for mobile devices is presented, that allows to design and perform an activity schedule in behavioral therapy. The paper describes the main challenges, that were encountered, especially in meeting the non-functional requirements of the application: simplicity, repeatability, robustness, personalization, re-usability...

Bacteriophages as potential tools for use in antimicrobial therapy and vaccine development
PublicationThe constantly growing number of people suffering from bacterial, viral, or fungal infections, parasitic diseases, and cancers prompts the search for innovative methods of disease prevention and treatment, especially based on vaccines and targeted therapy. An additional problem is the global threat to humanity resulting from the increasing resistance of bacteria to commonly used antibiotics. Conventional vaccines based on bacteria...

Overcoming Phobias: Harnessing the Power of Immersive Virtual Reality Therapy
PublicationThe goal of the chapter was to review the different therapeutic techniques used in the treatment of various forms of phobias, with particular emphasis on virtual reality treatment. We define different types of phobias, including social ones. We also describe treatment techniques – adopted from behavioral therapy – which have been developed to aid the treatment of phobias. Particular emphasis has been placed on the flooding, implosive...

Human-computer interactions in speech therapy using a blowing interface
PublicationIn this paper we present a new human-computer interface for the quantitative measurement of blowing activities. The interface can measure the air flow and air pressure during the blowing activity. The measured values are stored and used to control the state of the graphical objects in the graphical user interface. In speech therapy children will find easier to play attractive therapeutic games than to perform repetitive and tedious,...

Between therapy effect and false-positive result in animal experimentation
PublicationDespite the animal models’ complexity, researchers tend to reduce the number of animals in experiments for expenses and ethical concerns. This tendency makes the risk of false-positive results, as statistical significance, the primary criterion to validate findings, often fails if testing small samples. This study aims to highlight such risks using an example from experimental regenerative therapy and propose a machine-learning...

A Study on Influence of Normalization Methods on Music Genre Classification Results Employing kNN Algorithms
PublicationThis paper presents a comparison of different normalization methods applied to the set of feature vectors of music pieces. Test results show the influence of min-nlax and Zero-Mean normalization methods, employing different distance functions (Euclidean, Manhattan, Chebyshev, Minkowski) as a pre-processing for genre classification, on k-Nearest Neighbor (kNN) algorithm classification results.

Genre-Based Music Language Modeling with Latent Hierarchical Pitman-Yor Process Allocation
PublicationIn this work we present a new Bayesian topic model: latent hierarchical Pitman-Yor process allocation (LHPYA), which uses hierarchical Pitman-Yor pr ocess priors for both word and topic distributions, and generalizes a few of the existing topic models, including the latent Dirichlet allocation (LDA), the bi- gram topic model and the hierarchical Pitman-Yor topic model. Using such priors allows for integration of -grams with a topic model,...

Perception-based data processing in acoustics. Applications to music information retrieval and psychophysiology of hearing.
PublicationTematyka książki obejmuje w pierwszej kolejności opis mechanizmów kognitywnych leżących u podstaw percepcji muzyki. Przedstawione zostały również zagadnienia automatycznego rozpoznawania dźwięków instrumentów muzycznych i muzyki, zastosowanie nowych metod z dziedziny sztucznej inteligencji w szeroko rozumianej inżynierii dźwięku oraz komputerowych metod badania słuchu.

AUDIO SIGNAL EQUALIZATION BASED ON IMPULSE RESPONSE OF A LISTENING ROOM AND MUSIC CONTENT REPRODUCED
PublicationA research study presents investigations of the influence of the room acoustics on the frequency characteristic of the audio signal playback. First, a concept of a novel spectral equalization method of the room acoustic conditions is introduced. On the basis of the room spectral response, a system for room acoustics compensation based on an equalizer designed is proposed. The system settings depend on music genre recognized automatically....

Inhibitory mikrotubul w terapii przeciwnowotworowej = Inhibitors of microtubule in cancer therapy
PublicationW artykule opisano inhibitory mikrotubul, różnorodne związki chemiczne, znajdujące się w zaawansowanych przedklinicznych i wstępnych badaniach klinicznych. Pośród nich na uwagę zasługują półsyntetyczne analogi taksolu, substancje pochodzenia naturalnego, takie jak: epotilony, kombretastatyny, kolchinoidy, dolastatyny oraz syntetyczne związki o niskim ciężarze czasteczkowym: heterokombretastatyny, sulfonamidy, fenostatyny, pochodne...

Smart Pen - new multimodal computer control tool for graphomotorical therapy

Investigation of photothermolysis therapy of human skin diseases using optical phantoms
PublicationDermatological diseases, such as neurofibroma (Recklinghausen disease) or hemangiomas can be efficiently treated using photothermolysis from laser irradiation. We have utilized a developed 975 nm fiber diode laser as a low-cost alternative over common Nd:YAG lasers. This paper describes the investigations of interaction of 975 nm diode laser radiation-pulses with optical skin phantoms which were designed and manufactured in our...

H2AX phosphorylation, its role in DNA damage response and cancer therapy
PublicationDouble-strand breaks (DSBs) are the most deleterious DNA lesions, which, if left unrepaired, may have severe consequences for cell survival, as they lead to chromosome aberrations, genomic instability, or cell death. Various physical, chemical, and biological factors are involved in DSB induction. Cells respond to DNA damage by activating the so-called DNA damage response (DDR), a complex molecular mechanism developed to detect...
