Hierarchical random models in road transport safety
PublikacjaIn this paper multilevel approach to the issue of road safety level on the road network of European regions, classified as NUTS 2 in statistical databases of the EU, has been presented. The risk calculated as the number of death casualties in road accidents per 100,000 inhabitants of a given region has Poisson distribution. Therefore, generalized Poisson model has been assumed in the modelling process. Multilevel stochastic analysis...

ROAD SAFETY FOR CYCLISTS BASED ON THE CALORIES NEEDED
PublikacjaCyclists are a vulnerable group of road users, especially when no separate infrastructure for cyclists is provided. Then, road factors such as distance and altitude differences can indirectly affect cyclists' safety. Therefore, the authors proposed a procedure based on the geometric characteristics of the road that can determine riding difficulties for cyclists. The proposed procedure can be used both by the public authorities who...

Applying agiile practices to the development of safety-critical software
PublikacjaDevelopment of safety critical software is subjected to numerous restrictions and recommendations. To meet these requirements classical software development models (e.g. V-model) are usually applied. Agile methodologies, although rapidly increasing their popularity, were generally regarded as unsuitable for such projects. However, they offer potential benefits which provide a strong incentive to incorporate them into safety-critical...

Evaluating the convenience and safety effects of bicycle lanes in Gdańsk
PublikacjaBicycle lanes are lanes marked on a road and dedicated for exclusive use for cyclists.. Because they combine bike and motor traffic they provide directness and flow. However, a shared use of streets could result in bicycle-car accidents. Following up on the good practice Western countries have in planning cycle infrastructure, Gdańsk has recently introduced bike lanes on a few streets. The aim of the research was to assess the...

Effect of the Road Environment on Road Safety in Poland
PublikacjaRun-off-road accidents tend to be very severe because when a vehicle leaves the road, it will often crash into a solid obstacle (tree, pole, supports, front wall of a culvert, barrier). A statistical analysis of the data shows that Poland's main roadside hazard is trees and the severity of vehicles striking a tree in a run-off-road crash. The risks are particularly high in north-west Poland with many of the roads lined up with...
