Quantitative Storytelling in the Making of a Composite Indicator
PublikacjaThe reasons for and against composite indicators are briefly reviewed, as well as the available theories for their construction. After noting the strong normative dimension of these measures—which ultimately aim to ‘tell a story’, e.g. to promote the social discovery of a particular phenomenon, we inquire whether a less partisan use of a composite indicator can be proposed by allowing more latitude in the framing of its construction....

Multi-DBD actuator with floating interelectrode for aerodynamic control
PublikacjaIn this paper the use of a floating inter-electrode in a multi-DBD (dielectric barrier discharge) plasma actuator is described. The multi-DBD plasma actuators with floating inter-electrodes were investigated to get a longer DBD on a dielectric surface and to maximise generated net airflow. Our actuator was used to control the boundary layer flow separation around NACA0012 airfoil model. The results of our investigations suggests...

Seismic Response Analysis of Knee-Braced Steel Frames Using Ni-Ti Shape Memory Alloys (SMAs)
PublikacjaShape Memory Alloys (SMAs) are known as active materials that can be widely used for structural purposes due to their flag-shape behavior under loading and reloading. Their unique characteristics provided a potential solution for civil engi-neers especially to model buildings with the capability of dissipating seismic en-ergy. In this study, the main purpose is to explore the seismic behavior of Knee-Braced Frames (KBFs) and...

DETERMINATION OF ADDITIONAL TENSION IN TOWED STREAMER CABLE TRIGGERED BY COLLISION WITH UNDERWATER MOVING OBJECT
PublikacjaThe paper deals with issues connected with the behaviour of a streamer cable towed by a survey seismic vessel when the cable undergoes a strike triggered by collision with an underwater moving object. The consequences of such collisions may be both threat to the life of marine animals or damage to underwater units and large economic losses suffered by vessel owners. The risk of such collisions has increased over the last years...

Numerical study on pounding between two adjacent buildings under earthquake excitation
PublikacjaSeismic excitation, which results in large horizontal relative displacements, may cause collisions between two adjacent structures due to insufficient separation distance between them. Such collisions, known as earthquake-induced structural pounding, may induce severe damages. In this paper, the case of pounding between two adjacent buildings is studied by the application of single degree-of-freedom structural models. Impact is...

The response of three colliding models of steel towers to seismic excitation
PublikacjaA number of past and recent observations have confirmed that collisions between adjacent, insufficiently-separated structures occurring as a result of seismic excitation (structural pounding) may result in serious damage to structural elements and can even lead to their total destruction. This paper summarises the results obtained from a shaking table experimental study which investigated structural pounding between three adjacent...

Costs of privatization of the banking sector in Poland in 1997-2000
Dane BadawczeOn June 14, 1996, a special law was passed on the merger and grouping of certain banks in the form of joint-stock companies. Pursuant to these regulations, the PeKaO S.A. banking group was established, which was the only entity of this type established in this way. Additionally, by the end of 1996, four out of nine regional banks were sold, i.e. Wielkopolski...

Optimal retrofit strategy using viscous dampers between adjacent RC and SMRFs prone to earthquake‑induced pounding
PublikacjaNowadays, retrofitting-damaged buildings is an important challenge for engineers. Finding the optimal placement of Viscous Dampers (VDs) between adjacent structures prone to earthquake-induced pounding can help designers to implement VDs with optimizing the cost of construction and achieving higher performance levels for both structures. In this research, the optimal placement of linear and nonlinear VDs between the 3-story, 5-story,...

Collision-induced luminescence spectra of pyridine bombarded by 1000 eV He+ cations
PublikacjaHere we show collision-induced luminescence spectra measured for collisions of the He+cations with thearomatic six-membered ring of the pyridine molecule (C5H5N). Distinct emission bands due to the CH(A2Δ→X2Πr;B2Σ+→X2Πr;C2Σ+→X2Πr), CN(B2Σ+→X2Σ+), C2(d3Πg→a3Πu), and NH(A3Π→X3Σ−) transitions, aswell as atomic H, He, and C lines have been observed. Apart from the He atoms, all the emitters arise from thefragmentation of the pyridine...

In this research, a computational method for retrofitting of damaged buildings under seismic mainshock-aftershock sequences is proposed, and proposed computational...

We consider a system consisting of an infinite rod (a straight line) and a ball (a massless point) on the plane. The rod rotates uniformly around one of its points and experiences elastic collisions with the ball. We define a mathematical model for the dynamics of such a system and write down asymptotic...

Using GPUs for Parallel Stencil Computations in Relativistic Hydrodynamic Simulation
PublikacjaThis paper explores the possibilities of using a GPU for complex 3D finite difference computation. We propose a new approach to this topic using surface memory and compare it with 3D stencil computations carried out via shared memory, which is currently considered to be the best approach. The case study was performed for the extensive computation of collisions between heavy nuclei in terms of relativistic hydrodynamics.

Earthquake-Induced Structural Pounding
PublikacjaEarthquake-induced structural pounding between insufficiently separated build-ings, or bridge segments, has been repeatedly observed during ground motions. The reports after earthquakes indicate that it may lead to some local damage in the case of moderate seismic events or may result in considerable destruction or even collapse of colliding structures during severe ground motions. Pounding in build-ings is usually caused by the...

Residual Interstory Drift (RID) of BRBFs plays a key role in deciding to retrofit buildings after seismic excitation; however, existing formulas have limitations and cannot effectively help civil engineers, e.g., FEMA P-58, which is a conservative estimation method. Therefore, there is a need to...
