Bridge Ergonomic Design: A Review
PublicationHuman error remains the most common cause of marine incidents and it is worth emphasizing that navigator’s performance is directly affected by ergonomic factors on the bridge. Studies regarding influence of bridge design and work environment on the operator are rare, thus the main purpose of this paper is to fill in this gap. Documents issued by recognized organizations, research publications and additional sources were reviewed...

Case Study of Old Steel Riveted Railway Truss Bridge: From Material Characterization to Structural Analysis
PublicationThe structural analysis of an old steel riveted railway truss bridge located over the Maruska River on the Działdowo – Olsztyn, Poland railway line is performed in this paper to check its behaviour under today’s railway loads. The mechanical properties of construction steel extracted from the old steel bridge are investigated by tensile tests, impact tests through the Charpy pendulum impact V-notch, and an optical emission spectrometer....

Sensors and System for Vehicle Navigation
PublicationIn recent years, vehicle navigation, in particular autonomous navigation, has been at the center of several major developments, both in civilian and defense applications. New technologies, such as multisensory data fusion, big data processing, or deep learning, are changing the quality of areas of applications, improving the sensors and systems used. Recently, the influence of artificial intelligence on sensor data processing and...

Pylon foundation of a cable stayed bridge at the motorway ring road of Wrocław
PublicationThe largest bridge of the motorway ring road of Wroclaw is a cable stayed bridge over the Odra river near Rędzin. Due to hydrogeological conditions of the ground it was not convenient to use standard bored piles of high length. Instead shorter piles were applied with additional improvement by cement injections at the pile toes. This decision was possible by extending ground investigation program and application of numerical modeling...

Old-timer Vehicle - Braking Efficiency Measurement at Vehicle Inspection Stations and Roadworthiness Validity Certificate.
PublicationObtaining the Roadworthiness Validity Certificate for an old-timer vehicle involves an appropriate test performance, namely, "Old-timer Vehicle Technical Specification Compliance Test". It seems obvious that this kind of test should include a considerable checklist, however, the current legal regulations connected with this test are not specific enough. One of the certificates issued on this test results is "Old-timer Vehicle Technical...

Data Analysis in Bridge of Data
PublicationThe chapter presents the data analysis aspects of the Bridge of Data project. The software framework used, Jupyter, and its configuration are presented. The solution’s architecture, including the TRYTON supercomputer as the underlying infrastructure, is described. The use case templates provided by the Stat-reducer application are presented, including data analysis related to spatial points’ cloud-, audio- and wind-related research.

Numerical methods for the assessment of bridge safety barriers
PublicationThe paper presents a numerical study of the bus crash test for bridge safety barriers. The analysis is conducted with the use of explicit code LS-DYNA. The problem of hourglass effect in shell elements is discussed. The simulations of bus impact against the barrier show that the analyzed barrier withstands the impact forces and restrains the bus trajectory to the bridge road.

Vehicle classification based on soft computing algorithms
PublicationExperiments and results regarding vehicle type classification are presented. Three classes of vehicles are recognized: sedans, vans and trucks. The system uses a non-calibrated traffic camera, therefore no direct vehicle dimensions are used. Various vehicle descriptors are tested, including those based on vehicle mask only and those based on vehicle images. The latter ones employ Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) and gradient images...

The roadway bridge over Vistula River in Plock - design and construction.
PublicationThe paper presents the design and construction works of the Roadway Bridge over Vistula River in Plock (Poland), designed by first two paper authors as being the winners of international competition for design oraganized by Polish association of the bridge engineers. Total length of the bridge is 1,200 m; 615 m is the length of main bridge part over the Vistula riverbed, and 585 m is the length of access bridge part over river...

Diagnostics and monitoring of the longest span extradosed bridge in Europe
PublicationThe article presents complex diagnostic procedures applied for the purpose of behavior analysis of the extradosed bridge with the longest span in Europe that was built in 2018 in Poland. The system of health monitoring was used to: register internal forces in temporary supports, monitor concrete bonding, perform in situ diagnostics and operation tests. The bridge is a continuous four-span structure with spans theoretical lengths...

Study of displacements of a bridge abutment using FEM
PublicationSteel sheet piles are often used to support excavations for bridge foundations. When they are left in place in the permanent works, they have the potential to increase foundation bearing capacity and reduce displacements; but their presence is not usually taken into account in foundation design. In this article, the results of finite element analysis of a typical abutment foundation, with and without cover of sheet piles, are presented...

Test loading of the longest span arch bridge in Poland
PublicationBridge structures undergo thorough examination during test loading before they come into use. The aim of the examination is to check the correctness of the working structure and construction design assumptions. Test loading on the bridge is preceded by examination specification. This paper describes computational model and test loading results carried out during examibation of the bridge over the Vistula within the bypass of Puławy...
