NUTRITIONAL AND PHARMACEUTICAL APPLICATIONS OF BIOACTIVE COMPOUNDS IN TROPICAL FRUITS
PublicationDuring the past two decades our international scientific group investigated in vitro the physicochemical and nutritional characteristics of some cultivars of durian at various stages of ripening, mangosteen and new cultivars of snake fruit in comparison with widely used avocado, kiwifruit and mango, and in vivo their influence on laboratory animals. The main objective of the present study was to screen and compare the properties...

CNN Architectures for Human Pose Estimation from a Very Low Resolution Depth Image
PublicationThe paper is dedicated to proposing and evaluating a number of convolutional neural network architectures for calculating a multiple regression on 3D coordinates of human body joints tracked in a single low resolution depth image. The main challenge was to obtain a high precision in case of a noisy and coarse scan of the body, as observed by a depth sensor from a large distance. The regression network was expected to reason about...

Immunophenotyping and transcriptional profiling of in vitro cultured human adipose tissue derived stem cells
PublicationAdipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) have become an important research model in regenerative medicine. However, there are controversies regarding the impact of prolonged cell culture on the ASCs phenotype and their differentiation potential. Hence, we studied 10 clinical ASCs replicates from plastic and oncological surgery patients, in six-passage FBS supplemented cultures. We quantified basic mesenchymal cell surface marker transcripts...

A new approach to modeling of selected human respiratory system diseases, directed to computer simulations
PublicationThis paper presents a new versatile approach to model severe human respiratory diseases via computer simulation. The proposed approach enables one to predict the time histories of various diseases via information accessible in medical publications. This knowledge is useful to bioengineers involved in the design and construction of medical devices that are employed for monitoring of respiratory condition. The approach provides the...

Human Factors and Functional Safety Analysis in Designing the Control Rooms of Industrial Hazardous Plants
PublicationIn this work some aspects of human factors and functional safety analysis in designing the control rooms of industrial hazardous plants are presented. The “defence in depth” (D-in-D) concept is outlined. Some designing issues of the alarm system (AS) with regard to human factors to be supported using the human reliability analysis (HRA) are discussed. The AS and decision support system (DSS), when properly designed, would contribute...

New conjugates of tuftsin and muramyl dipeptide as stimulators of human monocytes-derived dendritic cells
PublicationMuramyl dipeptide (MDP) and tuftsin are known biologically active compound displaying a significant influence on various cell populations of innate immune response. MDP, as a fragment of bacterial cell wall, stimulates not only macrophages and monocytes, but also dendritic cells. In contrast, little is known about tuftsin influence on these cells. Therefore it seemed vital to access whether tuftsin or its derivatives conjugated...

Human UDP-Glucuronosyltransferases: Effects of altered expression in breast and pancreatic cancer cell lines.
PublicationIncreased aerobic glycolysis and de novo lipid biosynthesis are common characteristics of invasive cancers. UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) are phase II drug metabolizing enzymes that in normal cells possess the ability to glucuronidate these lipids and speed their excretion; however, de-regulation of these enzymes in cancer cells can lead to an accumulation of bioactive lipids, which further fuels cancer progression. We hypothesize...

Human breast milk concentration of neopterin at various stages of lactation and during a single feeding
PublicationThe aim of this work was to determine the physiological level of neopterin in human breast milk, and to study its variability depending on the duration of a single feeding and the lactation stage. Breast milk samples from 74 women were collected between 2 and 4 days after delivery, and at 15, 30, and 90 days after delivery. Additionally, breast milk samples from eight women were collected before and after 7 and 15 min of breastfeeding....

The Effect of Hyperbaric Storage on the Nutritional Value and Retention of Certain Bioactive Proteins in Human Milk
PublicationHuman milk (HM) contains the essential macronutrients and bioactive compounds necessary for the normal growth and development of newborns. The milk collected by human milk banks is stored frozen and pasteurized, reducing its nutritional and biological value. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of hyperbaric storage at subzero temperatures (HS-ST) on the macronutrients and bioactive proteins in HM. As control samples,...

Pre-analytical aspects in metabolomics of human biofluids – sample collection, handling, transport, and storage
PublicationMetabolomics is the field of omics research that offers valuable insights into the complex composition of biological samples. It has found wide application in clinical diagnostics, disease investigation, therapy prediction, monitoring of treatment efficiency, drug discovery, or in-depth analysis of sample composition. A suitable study design constitutes the fundamental requirements to ensure robust and reliable results from the...

MIC1-MAG1-SAG1 chimeric protein, a most effective antigen for detection of human toxoplasmosis
PublicationThis study describes a Toxoplasma gondii IgG ELISA test based on a new chimeric antigen containing three immunodominant regions from MIC1, MAG1 and SAG1 proteins of a parasite and shows that this test is useful for diagnostic purposes and may replace the lysed and whole-cell antigens.

Determination of Formaldehyde and Cyanide Ion in Human Nasal Discharge by Using Simple Spectrophotometric Methods
PublicationEnvironmental tobacco smoke (ETS) contains many toxic compounds which include substances classified as aldehydes (e.g. formaldehyde) and inorganic substances such as cyanide ions. The information on the determination of these compounds in water is available, but the monitoring data on the level of these substances in human body fluids are still lacking. In this work the procedure for determining cyanide ions and formaldehyde in...

Metabolic transformations of antitumor imidazoacridinone, C-1311, with microsomal fractions of rat and human liver

The influence of fresh cabbage and sauerkraut juices on the activity of protective enzymes in human cell lines
PublicationMechanizmami przeciwrakotwórczego działania związków zawartych w kapuście jest m.in. metaboliczna aktywacja enzymów II fazy detoksykacji, indukcja enzymów naprawczych DNA oraz aktywnośc przeciwutleniająca. Do enzymów II fazy odtruwania należą m.in. S-transferazy glutationowe (GST) oraz oksydoreduktaza chinonowa NQO1 zwana też DT-diaforazą. GST katalizują reakcję sprzęgania glutationu z wieloma różnymi typami ksenobiotyków, ułatwiając...
