The Changes of Groundwater Quality on the ''Czarny Dwór'' Intake in the Light of Polish-Swedish Investigations.

Experimental and Numerical Analysis of Air Trapping in a Porous Medium with Coarse Textured Inclusions
PublikacjaThe paper presents a 2D upward infiltration experiment performed on a model porous medium consisting of fine sand background with two inclusions made of coarser sands. The purpose of the experiment was to investigate the effects of structural air trapping, which occurs during infiltration as a result of heterogeneous material structure. The experiment shows that a significant amount of air becomes trapped in each of the inclusions. Numerical...

Arctic catchment as a sensitive indicator of the environmental changes: distribution and migration of metals (Svalbard)
PublikacjaArctic regions experience metal pollution, despite their remote location, and the distribution and migration of those metals determine their potential impact on the local environment. Here, a High-Arctic catchment (Revelva, Svalbard) located remotely from human-induced pollution sources is studied with respect to the distribution and migration of chosen trace elements (Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Bi, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Cs, Mo, Ni, Pb,...

The Revitalization Processes of the Port Structures in Gdynia and Gdansk on the Background of Contemporary Port Changes
PublikacjaTransformations of the port facilities against the modernization of the port structures are present in many city-port centers since more than 50 years. The modernization taking place in the ports located in Gdynia-Gdansk mainly concerns communication availability and adapted to the multimodal technology of transport and transshipment. Developing specialized tech-terminals serving a specific type of load, causes development of the...

Annual changes of basic parameters of bottom sediments from the Klodnica River Catchment
PublikacjaThe Klodnica River Catchment is heavily contaminated ecosystem located in area of the Upper Silesia Industrial Region. In this area various forms of human activity can be observed (e.g. mining coal underground, metallurgy, power/heat plants, wastewater discharged directly into the river). The impact of industrial and municipal wastes on this aquatic system causes to changes in the hydrographic network of river and the waters quality. In...

Study of Soil Temperature and Moisture Changes in a Physical Model of an Underground Cable Line
PublikacjaThe ampacity of power cables is highly dependent on the thermal resistivity of the soil in which they are laid. The lower it is, the higher this ampacity. The thermal resistivity of the soil decreases as its moisture increases. Therefore, it is preferable that the soil around the cables has high moisture. Unfortunately, the heat generated in heavily loaded cables causes the migration of moisture from the surrounding soil, which...

Possible effects of the 1984 St. Clair River ice jam on bed changes
PublikacjaThis study examines the possible effect of the record ice jam of 1984 in the St. Clair River on river bed changes and conveyance. Numerical simulations were made to examine the flow and bed shear stresses during the jam formation and release periods. Simulation results indicate that the ice jam in the river did not cause a significant increase in bed shear stress compared to pre- and post-jam open water conditions. The insignificant...

Simulation model for evaluation of packet sequence changed order of stream in DiffServ network
PublikacjaCurrent packet networks use a large variety of mechanisms which should support QoS (Quality of Service). One of those mechanisms is routing (calculating connection paths for incoming service requests). The most effective mechanism in QoS context is dynamic routing, which is based on the current network state described by the offered traffic matrix and link states. After switching between calculated available paths, connection...

THE SITUATION OF WOMEN IN THE POLISH LABOUR MARKET IN THE LIGHT OF CHANGES IN THE PENSION SECURITY SYSTEM
PublikacjaThe aim of the study is to examine the opinion of a group of women on their economic activity and decisions related to retirement. The first part of the article reviews previous research related to the economic activity of older people with a special focus on women. In the empirical part of the article, women’s opinions on issues related to retirement were analyzed. The research was carried out in 2016 on a sample of 45 women,...

Modelling Coarse Particulate Matter PM10 Concentration in the Tricity Area Using GIS
PublikacjaEnvironmental pollution is an issue of global concern, with Particulate Matter (PM) poisoning being a prime cause of lung cancer. This has led the European Commission to establish strict daily and annual PM concentration limits. The monitoring of air quality in major cities is the responsibility of European Member States. The Tricity, a 414.81 km 2 area in northern Poland, is monitored by a network of only 9 stations operated by...

Revealing dynamic changes of the volatile profile of food samples using PTR–MS
PublikacjaVolatile compounds carry valuable information regarding the properties of foodstuffs. Volatiles emitted from food can be used as, for example, indicators of quality, shelf-life, or authenticity. A better understanding of the multitude of transformations which occur during food processing could facilitate the optimisation of production, increase the desirability of food products, and also their wholesomeness. However, as some of...

Changes in the Global Competitiveness Index 4.0 Methodology: The Improved Approach of Competitiveness Benchmarking
PublikacjaThe Global Competitiveness Index (GCI) developed by the World Economic Forum (WEF) is used as a standard for measuring a country’s competitiveness. However, in literature, the GCI has been accused of numerous methodological flaws. Consequently, in 2018, the WEF introduced significant methodological changes. This study aims to examine whether the methodological modifications in the GCI’s structure increase its ability to capture...

Changes in gene methylation patterns in neonatal murine hearts: Implications for the regenerative potential
PublikacjaBackground The neonatal murine heart is able to regenerate after severe injury; this capacity however, quickly diminishes and it is lost within the first week of life. DNA methylation is an epigenetic mechanism which plays a crucial role in development and gene expression regulation. Under investigation here are the changes in DNA methylation and gene expression patterns which accompany the loss of regenerative potential. Results The...

Merging extremum seeking and self-optimizing narrowband interference canceller - overdetermined case
PublikacjaActive cancellation systems rely on destructive interference to achieve rejection of unwanted disturbances entering the system of interest. Typical practical applications of this method employ a simple single input, single output arrangement. However, when a spatial wavefield (e.g. acoustic noise or vibration) needs to be controlled, multichannel active cancellation systems arise naturally. Among these, the so-called overdetermined...

Comparison of state feedback and PID control of pressurizer water level in nuclear power plant
PublikacjaThe pressurizer water level control system in nuclear power plant with pressurized water reactor (PWR) is responsible for coolant mass balance. The main control goal is to stabilize the water level at a reference value and to suppress the effect of time-varying disturbances (e.g. coolant leakage in primary circuit pipeline system). In the process of PWR power plant operation incorrect water level may disturb pressure control or...
