Effect of ectoine on hydration spheres of peptides–spectroscopic studies
PublicationIn this paper, we use FTIR spectroscopy to characterize the hydration water of ectoine, its interactions with two peptides–diglycine and NAGMA, and the properties of water molecules in the hydration spheres of both peptides changed by the presence of the osmolyte. We found that the interaction of ectoine with the peptide hydration shells had no effect on its own hydration sphere. However, the enhanced hydration layer of the osmolyte...

Intelligence Augmentation and Amplification: Approaches, Tools, and Case Studies
PublicationMost experts agree that truly intelligent artificial system is yet to be developed. The main issue that still remains a challenge is imposing trust and explainability into such systems. However, is full replication of human intelligence really desirable key aim in intelligence related technology and research? This is where the concept of augmented intelligence comes into play. It is an alternative conceptualization of artificial...

Classification of submandibular salivary stones based on ultrastructural studies
PublicationIntroduction: Sialolithiasis remains a clinical problem with unclear etiopathogenesis, lack of prevention methods, and only surgical treatment. Materials and methods: An ultrastructure examination of submandibular sialoliths obtained from patients with chronic sialolithiasis was conducted using a scanning electron microscope and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results: Based on the results, we divided sialoliths into three types:...

Preparation of DNA films for studies under vacuum conditions
PublicationExperiments were carried out to determine the optimum conditions required for the preparation of uniform films of supercoiled plasmid DNA to be used in irradiation experiments under high vacuum conditions. Investigations reveal that significant damage to the DNA molecules occurs due to the evacuation process when films were formed from DNA samples in ultra high purity water only. A variety of bases were tested for their possible...

VUV irradiation studies of plasmid DNA in aqueous solution
PublicationInteractions of VUV light and DNA samples in aqueous solutions are reported. The damage induced by such radiation is quantified by monitoring both loss of supercoiled DNA and formation of single and double strand breaks using agarose gel electrophoresis. Irradiations were performed using synchrotron VUV photons of 130, 150, 170 and 190 nm. VUV irradiation experiments revealed enhanced damage upon irradiation with 170 nm photons...

DFT studies of the refractive index of boron-doped diamond
PublicationThe density functional theory is one of the optimal solutions in calculation of optical properties of materials on the quantum scale. In this paper, we have investigated the refractive index of a boron-doped diamond structure with the usage of Atomistic Toolkit software from Synopsys. During this study, various methods and pseudopotentials were checked to obtain an optimal performanceaccuracy method for calculation of such materials....

Application of the Optimum Dataset Method in Archeological Studies on Barrows
PublicationLight Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) became one of the technologies used in archaeological research. It allows for relatively easy detection of archaeological sites that have their own field form, e.g.: barrows, fortresses, tracts, ancient fields [1]. As a result of the scanning, the so-called point cloud is obtained, often consisting of millions of points. Such large measurement datasets are very time-consuming and labor-intensive...

Ionophores in polymeric membranes for selective ion recognition:impedance studies
PublicationW pracy badano dwa typy elektrod: membranowe elektrody jonoselektywne (ISE) oraz elektrody nowego typu all-solid-state (AAS).

Selected aspects of two-phase flow studies using different visualization techniques in minichannels
PublicationThe subject of the study is to present the possibility of the use of visualization techniques in the researches on two-phase flows, carried out by the authors for many years. These works included as follows: heat transfer during the flow boiling, boiling crises and condensation in flow. The issue of the heat transfer intensification during the flow boiling through the channels of small diameters was analyzed. All this work focused...

Testing the Positioning Accuracy of GNSS Solutions during the Tramway Track Mobile Satellite Measurements in Diverse Urban Signal Reception Conditions
PublicationMobile Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) measurements carried out on the railway consist of using satellite navigation systems to determine the track geometry of a moving railway vehicle on a given route. Their purposes include diagnostics, stocktaking, and design work in railways. The greatest advantage of this method is the ability to perform measurements in a unified and coherent spatial reference system, which...

Stress Detection of Children with Autism using Physiological Signals in Kaspar Robot-Based Intervention Studies
PublicationThis study aims to develop a stress detection system using the blood volume pulse (BVP) signals of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) during robot-based interven- tion. This study presents the heart rate variability (HRV) analysis method to detect the stress, where HRV features are extracted from raw BVP signals recorded from an E4 wristband during interaction studies with the social robot Kaspar. Low frequency power...

Experimental Studies of Concrete-Filled Composite Tubes under Axial Short- and Long-Term Loads
PublicationThe paper presents experimental studies on axially compressed columns made of concrete-filled glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) tubes. The infill concrete was C30/37 according to Eurocode 2. The investigated composite pipes were characterized by different angles of fiber winding in relation to the longitudinal axis of the element: 20, 55 and 85 degrees. Columns of two lengths, 0.4 m and 2.0 m, were studied. The internal diameter...

Moving object detection and tracking for the purpose of multimodal surveillance system in urban areas
PublicationBackground subtraction method based on mixture of Gaussians was employed to detect all regions in a video frame denoting moving objects. Kalman filters were used for establishing relations between the regions and real moving objects in a scene and for tracking them continuously. The objects were represented by rectangles. The objects coupling with adequate regions including the relation of many-to-many was studied experimentally...
