Paintings
PublicationThe painting as a curtain (...) A contradiction is therefore what constitutes a painting, and ambiguity is its right. As a young artist, I intuitively defined the work of art as a boundary. Over the years that intuition changed into a conviction that the particular form of art which is painting at the same time reveals and hides; it exists at this intersection of functions as a see-through curtain. We don’t know why there are some...

Strong ellipticity within the Toupin–Mindlin first strain gradient elasticity theory
PublicationWe discuss the strong ellipticity (SE) condition within the Toupin–Mindlin first strain gradient elasticity theory. SE condition is closely related to certain material instabilities and describes mathematical properties of corresponding boundary-value problems. For isotropic solids, SE condition transforms into two inequalities in terms of five gradient-elastic moduli.

Directed electromagnetic pulse dynamics: projecting operators method
PublicationIn this article, we consider a one-dimensional model of electromagnetic pulse propagation in isotropic media, takinginto account a nonlinearity of the third order. We introduce a method for Maxwell's equation transformation on thebasis of a complete set of projecting operators. The operators correspond to wave dispersion branches including thedirection of propagation. As the simplest result of applying the method, we derive a system...

Markov Model of Disease Development and Recovery
PublicationMarkov models are commonly used to simulate diseases and allow modeling of multiple health states and outcomes. Starting with the well known Le Bras multistate model (cascading failure model) with time-independent transitions we will see how simple Markov mortality models may be pressed into the service of survival and event history analysis. We will focus on more complex models which will be able to take into account remission,...

Strong ellipticity conditions and infinitesimal stability within nonlinear strain gradient elasticity
PublicationWe discuss connections between the strong ellipticity condition and the infinitesimal instability within the nonlinear strain gradient elasticity. The strong ellipticity (SE) condition describes the property of equations of statics whereas the infinitesimal stability is introduced as the positive definiteness of the second variation of an energy functional. Here we establish few implications which simplify the further analysis...

Multiple Solutions to Third-Order Differential Equations with Derivative Dependence and Deviating Arguments
PublicationIn this paper, we give some new results for multiplicity of positive (nonnegative) solutions for third-order differential equations with derivative dependence, deviating arguments and Stieltjes integral boundary conditions. We discuss our problem with advanced argument α and arbitrary β ∈ C([0,1],[0,1]), see problem (2). It means that argument β can change the character on [0,1], so β can be delayed in some set J ⊂ [0,1] and advanced...

Increasing the Efficiency of Ontology Alignment by Tracking Changes in Ontology Evolution
PublicationIn this paper we present a development of our ontology alignment framework based on varying semantics of attributes. Emphasising the analysis of explicitly given descriptions of how attributes change meanings they entail while being included within different concepts have been proved useful. Moreover, we claim that it is consistent with the intuitive way how people see the real world and how they find similarities and correspondences...

Positive solutions to second-order differential equations with dependence on the first-order derivative and nonlocal boundary conditions
PublicationIn this paper, we consider the existence of positive solutions for second-order differential equations with deviating arguments and nonlocal boundary conditions. By the fixed point theorem due to Avery and Peterson, we provide sufficient conditions under which such boundary value problems have at least three positive solutions. We discuss our problem both for delayed and advanced arguments α and also in the case when α(t)=t, t∈[0,1]....
