Technology and democracy: the who and how in decision-making. The cases of Estonia and Catalonia
PublicationThis paper focuses on the use of technology to improve democracy, comparing the cases of Estonia and Catalonia. Both examples are closely related in their use of technology to further democratize the decision-making processes but have opposite starting points. Estonia’s internet voting system is an offshoot of the comprehensive e-governance system developed by the Estonian government. It is meant to make it more convenient for...

Development of the System Assurance Reference Model for Generating Modular Assurance Cases
PublicationAssurance cases are structured arguments used to demonstrate specific system properties such as safety or security. They are used in many industrial sectors including automotive, aviation and medical devices. Larger assurance cases are usually divided into modules to manage the complexity and distribute the work. Each of the modules is developed to address specific goals allocated to the specific objects i.e. components of the...

Interaction of Acoustic and Thermal Modes in the Vibrationally Relaxing Gases. Acoustic Cooling
PublicationThe dynamic equation which governs an excess temperature associated with the thermal mode in vibrationally relaxing gas is derived. The nonlinear transfer of acoustic energy to the energy of the thermal mode in a relaxing gas causes slow variation of temperature with time. The nal dynamic equation is instantaneous. All types of sound, including aperiodic, may be considered as an acoustic source of corresponding heating or cooling....

Geometry Parametric Model Order Reduction with Randomly Generated Projection Bases
PublicationIn this work, a reduced-order model for geometry parameters and fast frequency sweep is proposed. The Finite Element Method is used to solve time-harmonic Maxwell’s equations. Taking into account the electromagnetic field does not arbitrarily vary as a function of frequency and geometry parameters, a low dimension system manifold is identified. Thus, the original Finite Element problem can be approximated by a model of reduced...

Various cases of preservation and adaptive reuse Heritage Buildings in the Port of Gdynia
PublicationThe port of Gdynia contains a diverse range of heritage assets, starting with its spatial layout which is an urban concept designed in the first half of the 1920s. It is important to point out, this historically-shaped harbor space is preserved in its general idea and still functioning in port activities. Another significant element is the structural, technological solution which was the basis for constructing the entire port area...

Connections between Mutually Unbiased Bases and Quantum Random Access Codes
PublicationWe present a new quantum communication complexity protocol, the promise--Quantum Random Access Code, which allows us to introduce a new measure of unbiasedness for bases of Hilbert spaces. The proposed measure possesses a clear operational meaning and can be used to investigate whether a specific number of mutually unbiased bases exist in a given dimension by employing Semi--Definite Programming techniques.

Ranking decision variants by subjective paird comparisons in cases with incomplete data.

Thermal properties of a cement composite containing phase change materials (PCMs) with post-pyrolytic char obtained from spent tyres as a carrier
PublicationThis work examines the possible use of post-pyrolysis char made from spent vehicle tyres as a carrier for phase change materials (PCM), which could be used as an additive to cement mortar. Because of the ability of PCM to accumulate heat, the cement composite obtained from it, apart from its structural and strength properties, will acquire an additional energy storage function, which can be very important for energy-saving construction. In...

Modelling hydraulic and capillary-driven two-phase fluid flow in unsaturated concretes at the meso-scale with a unique coupled DEM-CFD technique
PublicationThe goal of the research was to demonstrate the impact of thin porous interfacial transition zones (ITZs) between aggregates and cement matrix on fluid flow in unsaturated concrete caused by hydraulic/capillary pressure. To demonstrate this impact, a novel coupled approach to simulate the two-phase (water and moist air) flow of hydraulically and capillary-driven fluid in unsaturated concrete was developed. By merging the discrete...

Laminated plates and shells - first ply failure analysis within 6-parameter shell theory
PublicationThis work describes Tsai-Wu and Hashin criteria modifications, dictated by nonlinear 6-parameter shell theory with asymmetric strain measures and drilling rotation. The material law is based on standard orthotropic elastic constants for a non-polar continuum, under plane state of stress. First ply failure loads of cylindrical panel subjected to pressure and flat compressed plate are estimated by means of Finite Element Analysis....

Optimum shapes and dimensions of rubber bumpers in order to reduce structural pounding during seismic excitations
PublicationLarge displacement of structures observed during seismic excitations may lead to collisions between two adjacent, insufficiently-separated buildings and may result in major damages of both of them. In many building codes, appropriate equations or approximately recommended distances between structures in order to avoid pounding hazard have been introduced. Unfortunately, further, more detailed considerations show that safety situation...

Comparative analysis of the flow control over a circular cylinder with detached flexible and rigid splitter plates
PublicationA comparative study is performed on a circular cylinder with both flexible and rigid splitter plates (SPs). This study has the novelty of using single and dual detached SPs located downstream of the cylinder. The dimensionless gap distance between the first splitter plate and the cylinder as well as the distance between the SPs are varied. The strain of flexible SPs can be used for energy harvesting from the flow. Therefore, a...

The specimens were corroded in laboratory conditions, and only natural factors were controlled to raise the corrosion rate (reaching the level of 1 mm/year). Three different thicknesses of plates made of normal strength of shipbuilding steel are investigated (between...

Such porosities can appear within the plate in two forms, namely, even and uneven distributions. The modeled system assumes a polymer matrix where both shear and transverse factors coexist....

Technology and democracy: the who and how in decision-making. The cases of Estonia and Catalonia. METADATA
Open Research DataThe analysis of the Estonian data comes mainly from studies conducted to analyse the cost-efficiency of the Estonian online voting model (Krimmer; Duenas-Cid; Krivonosova, 2021), as well as from the contagion effect that ensued in other parts of the Estonian administration after the voting system was developed (Krimmer; Duenas-Cid,2019). In both cases,...

Air trapping problem during infiltration on the large areas
PublicationThe process of flow modeling in unsaturated porous medium is often found in many fields of sciences: geology, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, microbiology or chemistry. Problem is relatively complicated due to complexity of the system which contains three phases: water, air and soil skeleton. The flow of water in such a medium can be described using two-phase (2PH) flow formulation, which accounts the inflow of air and water phases,...

Ceramic composites for single-layer fuel cells
PublicationComposite materials consisting of acceptor doped lanthanum orthoniobate electrolyte phase (La0.98Ca0.02NbO4) and Li2O:NiO:ZnO semiconducting phase were synthesized. The precursor powder of La0.98Ca0.02NbO4 was prepared in nanocrystalline (mechanosynthesis) and microcrystalline (solid-state synthesis) form. The composite can be applied in a single-layer fuel cell, because of the presence of two phases acting as an anode and a cathode...
