Study of the atomic structure and morphology of the Pt3Co nanocatalyst
PublicationThe local structure and chemical disorder of a commercially available Pt3Co nanocatalyst supported on high surface area carbon were investigated. High-quality XAFS spectra were collected at the ELETTRA synchrotron XAFS 11.1 beamline. XAFS spectra analysis have been performed accounting for the reduction of the coordination number and degeneracy of three-body configurations, resulting from transmission electron microscopy (TEM)...

A study of concentration depolarization and quenching of photoluminescence of solutions
PublicationThe concentration-dependence of emission anisotropy r/r0 and quantum yield eta/eta0 of the photoluminescence of glycerol-water solutions of rhodamine B in two systems of viscosities 7.4 P and 0.72 P is investigated. The experimental data are compared with the new theory of concentraticn depolarization (J. Lumin., 5, 413 (1972)) and concentration quenching of photoluminescence (Acta Phys. Hungar., 30, 145 (1972)), which takes...

Suitability study of hybrid model of electrodynamic actuator
PublicationThis paper presents the proposal of the hybrid circuit-field model of an electrodynamic actuator. The field model uses the inductor current as the input data which is obtained from the circuit model or experimentally. The field model implemented using the FLUX program makes it possible to easily determine the pressure distribution acting on the disc. The results have been verified experimentally.

An empirical study on the impact of AspectJ on software evolvability
PublicationSince its inception in 1996, aspect-oriented programming (AOP) has been believed to reduce the effort required to maintain software systems by replacing cross-cutting code with aspects. However, little convincing empirical evidence exists to support this claim, while several studies suggest that AOP brings new obstacles to maintainability. This paper discusses two experiments conducted to evaluate the impact of AspectJ (the most...

A Study on Audio Signal Processed by "Instant Mastering"
PublicationAn increasing amount of music produced in home- and project-studios results in development and growth of "automatic mastering services". The presented investigation explores changes introduced to audio signal by various online mastering platforms. A music set consisting of 10 songs produced in small facilities was processed by eight on-line automatic mastering services. Additionally, some laboratory-constructed signals were tested....

An experimental study of high-hydrogen welding processes
PublicationThis paper presents investigation results of determination of the diffusible hydrogen content in deposited metal obtained by means of two most often used methods-the glycerin method and the mercury method. Relation has been defined between results of those methods in the area characteristic of low-hydrogen as well as high-hydrogen welding processes. Relations available in the literature do not include the diffusible hydrogen content...

Experimental and Numerical Study on Pounding of Structures in Series
PublicationPounding between structures in series during earthquakes may cause serious damage in the structural elements. The aim of this paper is to show the results of an experimental and numerical study that is focused on pounding between more than two structures which may be described as “structures in series”. In this study, the shaking table experiments, as well as the numerical analyses, were performed using three tower models including...

DETERMINATION OF THE CITY CENTRE. STUDY FOR THE TROJMIASTO AGGLOMERATION
PublicationDetermination of the centre of the city or agglomeration or generally the geographic area is a task which is often undertaken as part of the promotional actions realized by local authorities or directly by inhabitants. Nowadays, especially due to the development and availability of positioning technology and satellite imaging, this job is undertaken within the framework of general didactic tasks and group projects during the study...

Molecular hydrogen solvated in water – A computational study
PublicationThe aqueous hydrogen molecule is studied with molecular dynamics simulations at ambient temperature and pressure conditions, using a newly developed flexible and polarizable H2 molecule model. The design and implementation of this model, compatible with an existing flexible and polarizable force field for water, is presented in detail. The structure of the hydration layer suggests that first-shell water molecules accommodate the...

Similarity Measures for Face Images: An Experimental Study
PublicationThis work describes experiments aimed at finding a straightforward but effective way of comparing face images. We discuss properties of the basic concepts, such as the Euclidean, cosine and correlation metrics, test the simplest version of elastic templates, and compare these solutions with distances based on texture descriptors (Local Ternary Patterns). The influence of selected image processing methods (e.g. bilateral ltering)...

International Competitiveness in the Economics Literature: A Bibliometric Study
PublicationThis paper has as its main aim to consolidate the state of the art of academic research on international competitiveness, based on a bibliometric study of the economics literature published over the past 70 years. Citation data is collected from the ISI WEB of Science website, Scopus and Google Scholar and is analysed using Histcite and Vosviewer software. The growth pattern of the international competitiveness literature is investigated...

Study of displacements of a bridge abutment using FEM
PublicationSteel sheet piles are often used to support excavations for bridge foundations. When they are left in place in the permanent works, they have the potential to increase foundation bearing capacity and reduce displacements; but their presence is not usually taken into account in foundation design. In this article, the results of finite element analysis of a typical abutment foundation, with and without cover of sheet piles, are presented...

Contextualizing a Knowledge Base by Approximation – A Case Study
PublicationModular knowledge bases give their users opportunity to store and access knowledge at different levels of generality. In this paper we present how to organize a modular knowledge bases organized into contexts in which a user can express their knowledge in much simplified way, yet without losing its precision. The work is centered around the notion of approximation - i.e. reducing the arity of predicates used. The presentation is...

Supporting study tours in the teaching of architectural heritage
PublicationStudy tours are a highly effective way to acquire knowledge. They improve students’ understanding of issues that otherwise may seem partly abstract to them. Presented in this article is the unique way in Poland in which support is given to the teaching of architectural heritage. It has been carried out continuously for almost 50 years in the Faculty of Architecture at Gdańsk University of Technology (FA-UT), Gdańsk, Poland, in...

Study on Strategy in University Laboratory Class Teaching
PublicationLaboratory teaching is a critical way to ensure the effective input of techniques in engineering learning. Laboratory teaching not only contributes to improving course quality but also helps enrich comprehensive engineering application ability. However, there are some typical problems in current university laboratory teaching, such as rigid and isolated course design, outdated contents and materials, and not encouraging innovation...

A Preliminary Study and Analysis of Tidal Stream Generators
PublicationFor a sustainable future, tidal energy can play a vital role. Tidal energy relies on the gravitational pull of the Moon and the Sun along with the centrifugal forces created by the Earth. Tidal barrage uses the potential energy from the tide and has been very successful in electricity production. With the help of a turbine, kinetic energy can also be harnessed from tidal currents to generate electricity. However, it is not economically...
