Size-Reduction-Oriented Design of Compact CPW-Fed UWB Monopole Antenna
PublicationA structure and design optimization of compact CPW-fed UWB monopole antenna is presented. Explicit size reduction through constrained numerical optimization of all relevant geometry parameters of the structure leads to a very small footprint of only 321 mm2. At the same time, a very wide antenna bandwidth is achieved from 3.1 GHz to 17 GHz.

Structure and computationally-efficient simulation-driven design of compact UWB monopole antenna
PublicationIn this letter, a structure of a small ultra-wideband (UWB) monopole antenna, its design optimization procedure as well as experimental validation are presented. According to our approach, antenna compactness is achieved by means of a meander line for current path enlargement as well as the two parameterized slits providing additional degrees of freedom that help to ensure good impedance matching. For the sake of reliability, the...

Fast Multi-Objective Antenna Design Through Variable-Fidelity EM Simulations
PublicationA technique for fast multi-objective antenna optimization is introduced. A kriging interpolation surrogate constructed from sampled coarse-mesh EM simulations is utilized by multi-objective evolutionary algorithm (MOEA) to obtain the initial Pareto front approximation. The surrogate is defined in a subset of the original design space, determined by means of independently optimized individual objectives. Response correction techniques...

Computationally Efficient Multi-Objective Optimization of and Experimental Validation of Yagi-Uda Antenna
PublicationIn this paper, computationally efficient multi-objective optimization of antenna structures is discussed. As a design case, we consider a multi-parameter planar Yagi-Uda antenna structure, featuring a driven element, three directors, and a feeding structure. Direct optimization of the high-fidelity electromagnetic (EM) antenna model is prohibitive in computational terms. Instead, our design methodology exploits response surface...

Our approach is based on response surface approximation (RSA) modeling and variable-fidelity electromagnetic (EM) simulations. In the design process, a computationally cheap RSA surrogate model constructed from sampled coarse-discretization EM antenna simulations is optimized using a multi-objective evolutionary algorithm. The initially determined Pareto...

The assessment of the antenna performance is conducted with respect to the structure size and its reflection response. More specifically, the best possible tradeoffs between these two figures of merit are identified through multiobjective optimization at the level...

Objective relaxation algorithm for reliable simulation-driven size reduction of antenna structure
PublicationThis letter investigates reliable size reduction of antennas through electromagnetic-driven optimization. It is demonstrated that conventional formulation of the design task by direct footprint miniaturization with imposing constraints on electrical performance parameters may not lead to optimum results. The reason is that—in a typical antenna structure—only a few geometry parameters explicitly determine the antenna footprint,...

PublicationThis paper introduces a novel self-quadruplexing antenna (SQA) architecture using a substrate-integrated rectangular cavity (SIRC) for compact size, wide-frequency re-designability, and high isolation responses. The proposed SQA is developed by engraving two U-shaped slots (USSs) on the top conductor of the SIRC. The USSs are excited by employing four microstrip feedlines to achieve self-quadruplexing antenna characteristics. The...

Automatic Correction of Non-Anechoic Antenna Measurements using Low-Pass Filters
PublicationPrototype measurements belong to key steps in the development of antenna structures. They are normally performed in expensive facilities, such as anechoic chambers (ACs). Alternatively, antenna performance can be extracted (at a low cost) in non-anechoic conditions upon appropriate post-processing. Unfortunately, existing correction algorithms are difficult to set up and prone to failure, which limits their practical usefulness....

Kriging metamodels and design re‐utilization for fast parameter tuning of antenna structures
PublicationThe paper addresses the problem of computationally efficient electromagnetic (EM)‐driven design closure of antenna structures. The foundations of the presented approach are fast kriging interpolation metamodels, utilized for two purposes: (a) producing a good starting point for further parameter tuning, and (b) yielding a reasonable Jacobian matrix estimate to jump‐start the optimization procedure. The models are rendered using...

High-Efficacy Global Optimization of Antenna Structures by Means of Simplex-Based Predictors
PublicationDesign of modern antenna systems has become highly dependent on computational tools, especially full-wave electromagnetic (EM) simulation models. EM analysis is capable of yielding accurate representation of antenna characteristics at the expense of considerable evaluation time. Consequently, execution of simulation-driven design procedures (optimization, statistical analysis, multi-criterial design) is severely hindered by the...

Accelerated Parameter Tuning of Antenna Structures by Means of Response Features and Principal Directions
PublicationPopularity of numerical optimization has been steadily on the rise in the design of modern antenna systems.
