Assembly of Lipopolysaccharide in Escherichia coli Requires the Essential LapB Heat Shock Protein
PublikacjaHere, we describe two new heat shock proteins involved in the assembly of LPS in Escherichia coli, LapA and LapB (lipopolysaccharide assembly protein A and B). lapB mutants were identified based on an increased envelope stress response. Envelope stress responsive pathways control key steps in LPS biogenesis and respond to defects in the LPS assembly. Accordingly, the LPS content in ΔlapB or Δ(lapA lapB) mutants was elevated, with...

Polygons vs. clumps of discs: A numerical study of the influence of grain shape on the mechanical behaviour of granular materials
PublikacjaWe performed a series of numerical vertical compression tests on assemblies 01 20 granular material using a Discrete Element code and studied the results with regard to the grain shape. The samples consist of 5000 grains made from either 3 overlapping discs (clumps - grains with concavities) or six-edged polygons (convex grains). These two grain type have similar external envelope, which is a fund ion of a geometrical parameter...

Influence of grain shape on the mechanical behaviour of granular materials
PublikacjaWe performed series of numerical vertical compression tests on assemblies of 2D granular material using a Discrete Element code and studied the results in regard to the grain shape. The samples consist of 5000 grains made either of 3 overlapping discs (clump - grain with concavities) or of six-edged polygons (convex grain). These two types of grains have a similar external envelope, ruled with a geometrical parameter α. In the...

A low complexity double-talk detector based on the signal envelope
PublikacjaA new algorithm for double-talk detection, intended for use in the acoustic echo canceller for voice communication applications, is proposed. The communication system developed by the authors required the use of a double-talk detection algorithm with low complexity and good accuracy. The authors propose an approach to doubletalk detection based on the signal envelopes. For each of three signals: the far-end speech, the microphone...

EXPERIMENTAL EVALUATION OF DLC/STEEL SLIDING CONTACTS’ OPERATIONAL ENVELOPE
PublikacjaIn an industrial project concerning sliding bearings, a sliding pair was selected of high alloy steel vs. industrial grade DLC coated high alloy steel as a basis for an innovative design of high performance sliding bearings lubricated with a synthetic oil for use in geared transmission units. The development process required credible data on the ultimate resistance of the sliding pair to very high contact stress. An experimental...

Automated detection of sleep apnea and hypopnea events based on robust airflow envelope tracking
PublikacjaThe paper presents a new approach to detection of apnea/hypopnea events, in the presence of artifacts and breathing irregularities, from a single-channel airflow record. The proposed algorithm identifies segments of signal affected by a high amplitude modulation corresponding to apnea/hypopnea events. It is shown that a robust airflow envelope—free of breathing artifacts—improves effectiveness of the diagnostic process and allows...

A hyperelastic model for soils with stress-induced and inherent anisotropy
PublikacjaIn this paper, modelling of the superposition of stress-induced and inherent anisotropy of soil small strain stiffness is8presented in the framework of hyperelasticity. A simple hyperelastic model, capable of reproducing variable stress-induced9anisotropy of stiffness, is extended by replacement of the stress invariant with mixed stress–microstructure invariant to10introduce constant inherent cross-anisotropic component. A convenient...

Ellipticity in couple-stress elasticity
PublikacjaWe discuss ellipticity property within the linear couple-stress elasticity. In this theory, there exists a deformation energy density introduced as a function of strains and gradient of macrorotations, where the latter are expressed through displacements. So the couple-stress theory could be treated as a particular class of strain gradient elasticity. Within the micropolar elasticity, the model is called Cosserat pseudocontinuum...

The Unfolded Protein Response: A Double-Edged Sword for Brain Health
PublikacjaEfficient brain function requires as much as 20% of the total oxygen intake to support normal neuronal cell function. This level of oxygen usage, however, leads to the generation of free radicals, and thus can lead to oxidative stress and potentially to age-related cognitive decay and even neurodegenerative diseases. The regulation of this system requires a complex monitoring network to maintain proper oxygen homeostasis. Furthermore,...

Quasi-Static Response
PublikacjaConcern for the quasi-static response of ship and offshore structures, as required for safety and serviceability assessments. Attention shall be given to uncertainty quantification of quasi-static load and response analysis approaches, and their limitations, including exact and approximate methods for derivation of different acceptance criteria.

NON-LINEAR MASTIC CHARACTERISTICS BASED ON THE MODIFIED MSCR (MULTIPLE STRESS CREEP RECOVERY) TEST
PublikacjaMastic containing asphalt in its composition is an example of a viscoelastic material. It is an effective binder in asphalt. It consists of a filler (<0.063 mm) and asphalt mixed in the right proportions. Just like in asphalt, its response depends on the temperature level, the load and stress time. Changing the stress stiffness of the mastic affects the non-linear course of the stress-strain relationship. Modelling of the non-linear...

Efficacy of coping with work-related stress by firemen
PublikacjaThe aim of this study was efficacy of coping with work-related stress by firemen with reference to subjective health evaluation. Theoretical model of process of stress by Lazarus was applied. The group consistent of 230 line-duty firemen. Participation in traumatic events and sense of coherence both directly and indirectly, by stress, affected the health among firemen. In stress confrontation a wider array of task and emotional...

Stress Monitoring System for Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders
PublikacjaIn this article, a stress monitoring system tailored for individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD) and developed for the educational institution is presented. People with ASD face problems with effective stress management due to their high self-perceived levels of stress, poor ability to cope with it, and dificulties with the accurate detection of the source of stress. Consistently, being able to measure stress appears to...

On the effective properties of foams in the framework of the couple stress theory
PublikacjaIn the framework of the couple stress theory, we discuss the effective elastic properties of a metal open-cell foam. In this theory, we have the couple stress tensor, but the microrotations are fully described by displacements. To this end, we performed calculations for a representative volume element which give the matrices of elastic moduli relating stress and stress tensors with strain and microcurvature tensors.

Co-simulation strategy of transient CFD and heat transfer in building thermal envelope based on calibrated heat transfer coefficients
PublikacjaThe paper presents a strategy to develop a fully transient numerical model of a heat transfer in building, using a transient CFD model of indoor air and a thermal envelope model, running in a co-simulation. The strategy relies on the utilization of RANS with a high-Re turbulence model and a wall function, which enables to use a coarse computational mesh limiting the computational time. Since wall functions give invalid heat transfer...

Stress analysis of a strip under tension with a circular hole
PublikacjaThe paper addresses stress analysis of a strip with a circular hole under uniform uniaxial tension based oncircumferential stress expressionρπ. Stresses are analyzed in the infinite-length strips under tension with holes, the ratioof the hole radiusa to the strip half-widthb is either equal to:κ =a/b = 0.1 orκ = 0.5. Circumferential stresses aredetermined in selected cross-sections of the strip. The stress diagrams display local...

Application of the Mathar method to identify internal stress variation in steel as a welding process result
PublikacjaThe paper deals with the method to identify internal stresses in two-dimensional steel members. Steel members were investigated in the delivery stage and after assembly, by means of electric-arc welding. In order to perform the member assessment two methods to identify the stress variation were applied. The first is a non-destructive measurement method employing local external magnetic field and to detecting the induced voltage,...
