NON-STATIONARY THERMAL SELF-ACTION OF ACOUSTIC BEAMS CONTAINING SHOCK FRONTS IN THERMOCONDUCTING FLUID
PublikacjaNon-stationary thermal self-action of a periodic or impulse acoustic beam containing shock fronts in a thermoconducting Newtonian fluid is studied. Self-focusing of a saw-tooth periodic and impulse sound is considered, as well as that of a solitary shock wave which propagates with the linear sound speed. The governing equations of the beam radius are derived. Numerical simulations reveal that the thermal conductivity weakens the...

Preliminary studies on the effect of feed speed on the colour change of wood
PublikacjaThis paper presents the results of preliminary analyses of the effect of cutting parameters on changes in the colour of wood. Beech wood cut with use circular saw was analysed. The cutting parameter tested was the feed speed, represented by the feed per tooth. Sawing processes with different feed per tooth ranging from 0.0008 mm to 0.09 mm were analysed. It was observed that over the entire range of feed rate per tooth analysed,...

Transformational leadership for researcher’s innovativeness in the context of tacit knowledge and change adaptability
PublikacjaThis study explores how a learning culture supported by transformational leadership influences tacit knowledge sharing and change adaptability in higher education and how these relations impact this sector’s internal and external innovativeness. The empirical model was tested on a sample of 368 Polish scientific staff using the structural equation modeling (SEM) method. Then results were expanded by applying OLS regression using...

A review of phase change materials and heat enhancement methodologies
PublikacjaPhase change materials (PCMs) are an efficient alternative to store and release heat at a specific range of temperature. Here PCMs and heat enhancement methodologies for PCM storage are reviewed. A short overview of PCMs and their applications is presented in addition to the progress during the last 10 years. Heat enhancement techniques, that is, extended surfaces, multiple and composite PCMs, and encapsulation techniques, are...

Skills Mismatch in the Context of Technological Change
PublikacjaThis dissertation examines the impact of technological change (TC) on skills and competences and how higher education’s role has changed along the way. Quantitative research was conducted to reveal the perceptions of students and employers in Poland on the relevance of particular skills in an ICT based economy. The results of this research show that there is generally a rather insignificant discrepancy in these perceptions....

Extreme weather layer method for implementation of nature-based solutions for climate adaptation: Case study Słupsk
PublikacjaOne of the most severe climate risks that is expected to affect all regions is related to stormwater. Climate models, constructed based on long-term trends, show that extreme weather events such as storms, cloudbursts and a large rise in sea level will be significant in the coming decades. Moreover, even the frequency and intensity of “normal” rainfall events, such as microbursts, are expected to be remarkably higher than today...

Development of the Polish energy sector through transformation and harmonization with the European energy and climate policy
PublikacjaThe paper presents the dilemmas of energy sector development vs European energy policy due to the way of energy transition. The identification of barriers and opportunities for the development of the power industry is presented. The possibilities of using modern energy technologies for the processes of energy transformation are described. The path useful to achieving climate and energy goals is determined. The new method of electricity...

Analytical approach for membrane action in laterally-restrained reinforced concrete square slabs under uniformly distributed loads
PublikacjaLaterally-restrained reinforced concrete slabs can mobilise compressive membrane action and subsequent tensile membrane action under extreme loading conditions, thereby enhancing the load resistance under uniformly distributed loads. Previous analytical study focuses primarily on tensile membrane action in simply-supported slabs. This paper describes an analytical approach for membrane action in laterally-restrained square slabs....

Changes in conditions of acoustic wave propagation in the Gdansk deep as an effect of climate changes in the Baltic Sea region
PublikacjaThe article presents the results from a research project investigating acoustic climate changes in the Gdansk Deep based on data extending from 1902 to 2019. This part of the southern Gotland Basin, is rarely discussed in the scientific literature. The speed of sound in the seawater is a function of temperature, salinity, and depth. In such shallow sea as Baltic Sea, the impact of depth is not substantial. The other two factors...

The study of acoustic climate of the Southern Baltic
PublikacjaThis paper presents the statistical characteristics of seawater properties, which are necessary for predicting the propagation of acoustic waves in selected areas of the Baltic Sea. The statistics were elaborated based on long-term measurements of vertical distributions of sound speed, temperature, and salinity, and the nonlinearity parameter B/A. Nonlinear properties of the environment are considered, in connection...

Influence of Gaps’ Geometry Change on Leakage Flow in Axial Piston Pumps
PublikacjaAxial piston pumps are the core elements of most medium and high-pressure hydraulic systems. High volumetric efficiency and high working pressures are the main advantages of this type of pumps. Therefore it is necessary to accurately calculate the leakage flow through the gaps to design efficient high-pressure pump. The main difficulty of such calculations is the fact, that the gaps change their geometry during pumping process....

Economic growth, structural change and quality upgrading in New Member States
PublikacjaThe purpose of this research is to present the recent developments concerning structural change and productivity growth in New Member States and the role played in such process by country specific factors. We focus on ten countries (NMS-10) which joined the EU in 2004 and analyze productivity dynamics of their labor structures between the years 1995 and 2005 in a comparative setting versus EU-15 economies. NMS-10 have gone through...

Selected symmetrically substituted carbazoles: Investigation of anticancer activity and mechanisms of action at the cellular and molecular levels
PublikacjaDNA topoisomerases play a critical role as essential enzymes in controlling alterations in the topology of DNA. They achieve this by orchestrating the coordinated process of breaking and rejoining DNA strands, which is crucial for maintaining the proper structure of DNA during regular cellular development. The search for and development of new potential anticancer drugs is a challenging yet immensely important area of research...

The Palais–Smale condition for the Hamiltonian action on a mixed regularity space of loops in cotangent bundles and applications
PublikacjaWe show that the Hamiltonian action satisfies the Palais-Smale condition over a “mixed regular- ity” space of loops in cotangent bundles, namely the space of loops with regularity H^s, s ∈ (1/2, 1), in the baseand H^{1−s} in the fiber direction. As an application, we give a simplified proof of a theorem of Hofer-Viterbo on the existence of closed characteristic leaves for certain contact type hypersufaces in cotangent bundles.

The community involvement of courts: an action research study in the context of the Polish justice system
PublikacjaPurpose – As a rule, common courts are hermetic organizations, separated from their stakeholders by procedures based on legal provisions. For these reasons, they are often perceived as unreliable and non-transparent, and as such, they do not inspire trust among stakeholders. The authors posit that the court’s community involvement may lead to the increased accountability and legitimacy of courts, which should in turn result in...

Impact of surface skin temperature change on blood flow characteristics in palm
PublikacjaHeating a human palm during 3 minutes period causes changes in superficial skin temperature and leads to thermoregulation system response. The response time and level of flow characteristics change depend on the subject hand size and health of his vascular tree. A solution of Pennes bioheat propagation model was analyzed in order to see how much heat has to be transferred into the tissue to extort the observable reaction. The reflective...
