The searchlight problem for road networks
PublikacjaWe consider the problem of searching for a mobile intruder hiding in a road network given as the union of two or more lines, or two or more line segments, in the plane. Some of the intersections of the road network are occupied by stationary guards equipped with a number of searchlights, each of which can emit a single ray of light in any direction along the lines (or line segments) it is on. The goal is to detect the intruder,...

Modelling and analysis of beam/bar structure by application of bond graphs
PublikacjaThe paper presents an uniform, port-based approach to modelling of beam/bar systems (trusses). Port-based model of such distributed parameter system has been defined by application of the bond graph methodology and the distributed transfer function method (DTFM). The proposed method of modelling enables to formulate input data for computer analysis by application of the DTFM. The constructed computational package enables the frequency...

Possibility to use engine compression ignition engines in floating power plants marine
PublikacjaCompression-ignition engines used in ship technology as main propulsion engines are large units reaching even to 50-60 MW. The engines can be used in power industry for electricity generation in a simple or combined steam turbine system in combined heat and power plants. The leading engine in such an arrangement is an internal-combustion piston engine. The main propulsion engines are used in large piston internal-combustion engines...

Zero-Visibility Cops and Robber Game on a Graph
PublikacjaWe examine the zero-visibility cops and robber graph searching model, which differs from the classical cops & robber game in one way: the robber is invisible. We show that this model is not monotonic. We also provide bounds on both the zero-visibility copnumber and monotonic zero-visibility copnumber in terms of the pathwidth.

Structure of own costs of private universities in 2010
Dane BadawczeThe biggest costs are generated by basic teaching activities. However, in the context of the competitiveness and quality of education in private universities, research expenditure is a cause for concern. Dataset shows that these universities spend less than 4.0% on research compared to other activities. For comparison, in public universities research...

Drawing maps with advice
PublikacjaRozważamy następujący problem obliczeniowy. Agent zostaje umieszczony w wierzchołku nieznanego mu grafu. Wierzchołki grafu są nierozróżnialne, natomiast krawędzie posiadają numery portów. Zadaniem agenta jest wyznaczenie mapy, tzn. obliczenie izomorficznej kopii grafu, lub obliczenie dowolnego drzewa spinającego grafu. Bez dodatkowej informacji zadań tych nie można wykonać. W artykule wyznaczamy oszacowania na minimalną liczbę...

Geometrical versus analytical approach in problem solving- an exploatory study
PublikacjaAbstract. In this study we analyse the geometrical visualization as a part of the process of solution. In total 263 students in the first year of study at three different universities in three different countries (Poland, Slovakia and Spain) were asked to solve four mathematical problems. The analysis of the results of all students showed that geometrical visualization for problems where there is a possibility to choose different ways...

Impulse Impedance Measurements of Lightning Protection Earthings
PublikacjaLightning protection earthing systems should be tested at currents with time parameters similar to those of lightnings. A method and definition of a measured value of impulse impedance are introduced. The impulse impedance was determined by a quotient of voltage drop on the tested earthing to a value of current in measure circuit. The usefulness of the impulse method for lightning protection evaluation is tested on radio base stations...

Model of Volunteer Based Systems.
PublikacjaThere are two main approaches to processing tasks requiring high amounts of computational power. One approach is using clusters of mostly identical hardware, placed in dedicated locations. The other approach is outsourcing computing resources from large numbers of volunteers connected to the Internet. This chapter attempts to formulate a mathematical model of the volunteer based approach to distributed computations and apply it...

Thermal Imaging in Wound Healing Diagnostics
PublikacjaResults of a project searching for objective, quantitative evaluation of postoperative wound healing in cardiosurgery are presented. We propose simple thermal models of the healing processes after cardiosurgery interventions as objective descriptors allowing classification of patients for extraction and following recovery at home or for prolonged treatment in a hospital. Classification of healing as the normal process or as a process...

A model, design, and implementation of an efficient multithreaded workflow execution engine with data streaming, caching, and storage constraints
PublikacjaThe paper proposes a model, design, and implementation of an efficient multithreaded engine for execution of distributed service-based workflows with data streaming defined on a per task basis. The implementation takes into account capacity constraints of the servers on which services are installed and the workflow data footprint if needed. Furthermore, it also considers storage space of the workflow execution engine and its cost....

Nonstandard Equivalence Scales and their Applications for European Union Countries
PublikacjaThe aim of this study is twofold. First, we propose new methods of estimating equivalence scales. We call these methods nonstandard to distinguish them from the standard procedures based on the microeconomic theory of demand systems. Searching for the ‘as simple as possible’ method has been a leitmotiv of this study. Second, we estimate various forms of equivalence scales for 28 European Union (EU) member countries and four non-member...
