DEM modelling of concrete fracture based on its structure micro-CT images
PublikacjaW rozdziale książki zawarto numeryczne wyniki mezoskopowe dotyczące postępującego pękania betonu na poziomie kruszywa. Do badania procesu pękania belki betonowej z karbem w trzech (3D) i dwóch (2D) wymiarach zastosowano metodę elementów dyskretnych (DEM). Niejednorodność betonu uwzględniono stosując czterofazowy opis: kruszywo, zaprawa, makropustki i międzyfazowe strefy przejściowe. W obliczeniach DEM na podstawie zdjęć rentgenowskich...

Determination of the shape of the CFGFT cylindrical column based on laboratory tests
PublikacjaAnalyses were carried out on glass-fibre-reinforced polymer tube columns with reference to laboratory tests. The angles of the glass fibre beams were 20◦, 55◦ and 85◦. The study employed non-classical operational calculus. Various modulated harmonic signal shapes were considered for columns and tubes at buckling. The buckling loads were assessed and compared for different models.

Effect of free water on the quasi‑static compression behavior of partially‑saturated concrete with a fully coupled DEM/CFD approach.
PublikacjaThe work aims to numerically investigate the quasi-static response of partially fluid-saturated concrete under two-dimensional uniaxial compression at the mesoscale. We investigated how the impact of free pore fluid content (water and gas) affected the quasi-static strength of concrete. The totally and partially fluid-saturated concrete behavior was simulated using an improved pore-scale hydro-mechanical model based on DEM/CFD....

Normal stress distribution in built‑up cold‑formed column in relation to interconnecting bolt spacing
PublikacjaIn order to increase a stiffness of cold-formed steel (CFS) elements it is practised to built-up the cross-section. In the analysed case, a main element is strengthened by adding extra chord in contact partially along the column. This additional chord acts as a longitudinal stiffener connected with the main section by series of bolts. Authors check whether rules applied over the years, for hot-rolled elements, can be indiscriminately...

Proposed concept for the development of residential floating facilities
PublikacjaCurrently, a dynamic growth of interest in residential buildings located on the water can be observed in Poland. However, the lack of legal regulations, the increase in society's affluence and overpopulation in city centers lead to reflection on the development strategy that should be implemented for maritime construction. The publication presents a proposal of four development strategy concepts: aggressive,...

Rebuilding Bailey Bridge to Bridge With Bascule Span – A Case Study
PublikacjaThe structural analysis of a road foldable prefabricated steel Bailey- type bridge located over the Tuga River in Żelichowo, Poland is performed in this paper. Interesting and untypical bridge redevelopment performed made it possible to lift the middle foldable bridge span by approximately 4.0 m concerning the existing state. The paper begins with a survey of literature carried out on the investigations of foldable Bailey-type...

Static and dynamic concrete calculations: Breakable aggregates in DEM model
PublikacjaThe paper deals with the calculations of a 3-point bending beam under static and dynamic loads. The real microstructure was obtained from laboratory tests using micro-tomography images. The quasi-static results were compared directly with experimental data at both macro and micro levels. Subsequently, higher strain rates were applied to investigate dynamic effects. The study focused on the influence of dynamic loading on the macroscopic...

A study on microcrack monitoring in concrete: discrete element method simulations of acoustic emission for non-destructive diagnostics
PublikacjaThe research is focused on the monitoring of fracture evolution in concrete beams under three-point bending using the acoustic emission technique and the discrete element method. The main objective of the study was to numerically and experimentally investigate the mechanism behind the generation of elastic waves during acoustic emission events and their interaction with micro- and macro-cracking in concrete beams under monotonic...

Analysis of the Usefulness of Cheap Audio Recorders for Spectral Measurement of Environmental Noise
PublikacjaEnvironmental noise pollution is nowadays one of the most serious health threats. The impact of noise on the human body depends not only on the sound level but also on its spectral distribution. Reliable measurements of the environmental noise spectrum are often hampered by the very high price of top quality measuring devices. This paper explores the possibility of using much cheaper audio recorders for the frequency analysis....

Application of the 3D DEM in the modelling of fractures in pre-flawed marble specimens during uniaxial compression

Sewage sludge consists of primary sludge and waste activated sludge (WAS), and low biodegradability of WAS limits methane production. This study presents the influence of the low-temperature pretreatment (LT-PT) of WAS on the efficiency of AD. Different...
