Swapping Space for Time: An Alternative to Time-Domain Interferometry
PublicationYoung's double-slit experiment [1] requires two waves produced simultaneously at two different points in space. In quantum mechanics the waves correspond to a single quantum object, even as complex as a big molecule. An interference is present as long as one cannot tell for sure which slit is chosen by the object. The more we know about the path, the worse the interference. In the paper we show that quantum mechanics allows for...

Crystallization of space: Space-time fractals from fractal arithmetic
PublicationFractals such as the Cantor set can be equipped with intrinsic arithmetic operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) that map the fractal into itself. The arithmetics allows one to define calculus and algebra intrinsic to the fractal in question, and one can formulate classical and quantum physics within the fractal set. In particular, fractals in space-time can be generated by means of homogeneous spaces associated...

TIME-AND-SPACE STRUCTURE OF FORCE-DRIVEN RIGID SPHEREWAVEFIELD
PublicationThis paper introduces a time-domain, causality-inspired description of a vector-source acoustic wavefield of arbitrary time evolution, where a sphere is a practical realisation of quasi-point contact surface without which a point force would not be able to exert an impact onto non-viscous fluid. At every space location, the resulting acoustic field is described by a pair of physical variables characterising the time evolution of...

Stability analysis of interconnected discrete-time fractional-order LTI state-space systems
PublicationIn this paper, a stability analysis of interconnected discrete-time fractional-order (FO) linear time-invariant (LTI) state-space systems is presented. A new system is formed by interconnecting given FO systems using cascade, feedback, parallel interconnections. The stability requirement for such a system is that all zeros of a non-polynomial characteristic equation must be within the unit circle on the complex z-plane. The obtained...

Dynamic fracture of brittle shells in a space-time adaptive isogeometric phase field framework
PublicationPhase field models for fracture prediction gained popularity as the formulation does not require the specification of ad-hoc criteria and no discontinuities are inserted in the body. This work focuses on dynamic crack evolution of brittle shell structures considering large deformations. The energy contributions from in-plane and out-of-plane deformations are separately split into tensile and compressive components and the resulting...

Time versus space trade-offs for randezvous in trees
PublicationTwo identical (anonymous) mobile agents start from arbitrary nodes of an unknown tree and have to meet at some node. Agents move in synchronous rounds: in each round an agent can either stay at the current node or move to one of its neighbors. We consider deterministic algorithms for this rendezvous task. The main result of this paper is a tight trade-off between the optimal time of completing rendezvous and the size of memory...

Introducing concurrent engineering to space and satellite technology undergraduate course
PublicationIn recent decade concurrent engineering has become a de facto leading methodology of work in space, aeronautics and sometimes even automotive industry. It has been used in designing ESA space missions for 20 years now, with rst Concurrent Design Facility (CDF) built in ESTEC in 1998. Still, it has not become a universal standard in engineering, and universities are specically reluctant to adopt it into their curricula. As a result,...

Changes of Conformation in Albumin with Temperature by Molecular Dynamics Simulations
PublicationThis work presents the analysis of the conformation of albumin in the temperature range of 300K – 312K, i.e., in the physiological range. In this range of temperature, we study parameters of the molecule and the conformational entropy derived from...

Wavepacket of the Universe and its Spreading
PublicationWavepackets in quantum mechanics spread and the Universe in cosmology expands. We discuss a formalism where the two effects can be unified. The basic assumption is that the Universe is determined by a unitarily evolving wavepacket defined on space-time. Space-time is static but the Universe is dynamic. Spreading analogous to expansion known from observational cosmology is obtained if one regards time evolution as a dynamical process...

A space-efficient algorithm for computing the minimum cycle mean in a directed graph
PublicationAn algorithm is introduced for computing the minimum cycle mean in a strongly connected directed graph with n vertices and m arcs that requires O(n) working space. This is a considerable improvement for sparse graphs in comparison to the classical algorithms that require O(n^2) working space. The time complexity of the algorithm is still O(nm). An implementation in C++ is made publicly available at http://www.pawelpilarczyk.com/cymealg/.

Size effects and geometric nonlinearity are included...
