Structure and Stability Characterization of Natural Lake Pigments Made from Plant Extracts and Their Potential Application in Polymer Composites for Packaging Materials
PublicationNatural dyes were extracted from various plant sources and converted into lake pigments based on aluminum and tin. Three different plants (weld, Persian berries, and Brazilwood) were chosen as representative sources of natural dyes. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) and triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (QqQ MS) were used to identify dyestuffs in the raw extracts. The natural dyes and lake pigments were further characterized...

Stratification of nano-pigments in anti-corrosive coatings by means of magnetic field
PublicationThe concept of self-stratification of coatings, although attractive, causes difficulties in its practical use, especially when pigments are added to the resins. An alternative way of obtaining a multilayer structure in a single step was presented. Using the inhomogeneous magnetic field and magnetically active components of the coating, the possibility of vertically graded differentiation of the one layer properties has been verified....

A Numerical Model Study on Ice Boom in a Coastal Lake
PublicationA numerical study on the effectiveness of the proposed ice boom to be installed near the entrance of Lake Notoro, Hokkaido, Japan to prevent sea ice moving into the lake is presented. A two-dimensional hydro–ice dynamics model was modified to allow for the treatment of ice-boom interaction with the effect of tidal current. The numerical model is a coupled hydrodynamic and ice dynamic model. The ice dynamic component uses a Lagrangian...

Modelling of joining route segments of differential curvature
PublicationThe paper presents a new general method of modelling route segments curvature using differential equations. The method enables joining of route segments of different curvature. Transitional curves of linear and nonlinear curvatures have been identified in the case of joining two circular arcs by S-shaped and C-oval transitions. The obtained S-shaped curves have been compared to the cubic C-Bezier curves and to the Pythagorean hodograph...

Selection of Features for Multimodal Vocalic Segments Classification
PublicationEnglish speech recognition experiments are presented employing both: audio signal and Facial Motion Capture (FMC) recordings. The principal aim of the study was to evaluate the influence of feature vector dimension reduction for the accuracy of vocalic segments classification employing neural networks. Several parameter reduction strategies were adopted, namely: Extremely Randomized Trees, Principal Component Analysis and Recursive...

Vocalic Segments Classification Assisted by Mouth Motion Capture
PublicationVisual features convey important information for automatic speech recognition (ASR), especially in noisy environment. The purpose of this study is to evaluate to what extent visual data (i.e. lip reading) can enhance recognition accuracy in the multi-modal approach. For that purpose motion capture markers were placed on speakers' faces to obtain lips tracking data during speaking. Different parameterizations strategies were tested...

Make lighting healthier
PublicationLife on Earth evolved in day-and-night cycles. Plants and animals, including insects such as the fruit fly, have a biological clock that controls their circadian rhythms — as the 2017 winners of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine showed. Now, humans’ increasing reliance on artificial lighting is changing those rhythms.

Earthquake-induced pounding between superstructure segments of isolated bridge
PublicationThe use of seismic isolation in bridges is considered as one of the most promising advanced technologies to enhance the structural safety during earthquakes. However, the method results in larger displacements of superstructure segments increasing the probability of pounding between them. Reports after severe ground motions show that the earthquake-induced structural pounding may lead to significant damage in isolated bridges....

Activity-based payments: alternative (anonymous) online payment model
PublicationElectronic payments are the cornerstone of web-based commerce. A steady decrease in cash usage has been observed, while various digital payment technologies are taking over. They process sensitive personal information raising concerns about its potentially illicit usage. Several payment models that confront this challenge have been proposed. They offer varying levels of anonymity and readiness for adoption. The aim of this study...

Seismic Pounding Between Bridge Segments: A State-of-the-Art Review
PublicationEarthquake-induced structural pounding in bridge structures has been observed in several previous seismic events. Collisions occur at the expansion joints provided between adjacent decks or between the deck and abutment. Pounding between the structural elements may lead to severe damages and even to the unseating of the bridge in certain cases. Several investigations have been performed to study pounding in bridges under uniform...

Optimum shape of turnout diverging track with segments of variable curvature
PublicationIn the paper an attempt has been made to focus on shaping the variable curvature in the diverging track of the railway turnout. Basing on some earlier studies, solutions provided with a circular arc in the mid-zone, and in the extreme regions with segments of non-linear curvature of equal length and zero curvature at the start and end of the turnout, have been assumed as models. The most advantageous type of curvature has been...
