Dependence between quality and removal effectiveness of organic matter in hybrid constructed wetlands

Geochemical fractionation of organic matter in the Jurassic-Cretaceous Vaca Muerta shale, Argentina
PublikacjaSeveral studies have indicated the presence of more than one generation of bitumen that could be isolated from rocks through sequential extraction or after demineralization or both. Nabbefeld et al. (2010a) and Holman et al. (2012, 2014) termed bitumen obtained after solvent extraction from the undigested rock as “Bitumen I" and that obtained by extraction after demineralization of rock as “Bitumen II.” The occurrence of different...

Quantification of ultrafine airborne particulate matter generated by the wear of car brake materials
PublikacjaThe wear of car brakes is one of the main sources of airborne particulate matter in urban environments. Ultrafine wear particles are of special environmental interest since they can easily penetrate the human body through inhalation and cause various diseases. In the present study, the contribution of ultrafine particles to airborne particulate matter emitted from car brake materials was investigated under different friction conditions....

Antibiotic resistance in wastewater, does the context matter? Poland and Portugal as a case study
PublikacjaAntibiotic resistance has been considered a major human health threat that may endanger the success of medicine. Recent studies have unveiled worldwide asymmetries of antibiotic resistance occurrence, being factors as diverse as climate, socioeconomic, or antibiotic use possible drivers of such asymmetric distribution. In Europe, where clinical antibiotic resistance is surveyed for more than 20 years, the European Center for Disease...

Modelling Coarse Particulate Matter PM10 Concentration in the Tricity Area Using GIS
PublikacjaEnvironmental pollution is an issue of global concern, with Particulate Matter (PM) poisoning being a prime cause of lung cancer. This has led the European Commission to establish strict daily and annual PM concentration limits. The monitoring of air quality in major cities is the responsibility of European Member States. The Tricity, a 414.81 km 2 area in northern Poland, is monitored by a network of only 9 stations operated by...

Quantitatively and qualitatively characteristic of organic matter in sewage after treatment in constructed wetlands
PublikacjaNajczęstszym kryterium oceny skuteczności oczyszczania ścieków jest efektywność usuwania zanieczyszczeń. Jednakże oczyszczone ścieki zawierają pewne ilości substancji organicznej niepodatnej na rozkład biologiczny tzw. refrakcyjnej.Organiczne substancje refrakcyjne to przede wszystkim kwasy humusowe, które swoja obecnością w wodzie mogą pogarszać jej właściwości i utrudniać procesy uzdatniania do celów konsumpcyjnych. Wykazano,że...

Tailoring of SiOC composition as a way to better performing anodes for Li-ion batteries
PublikacjaPolymer derived silicon oxycarbide (SiOC) ceramics are investigated as potential anodes for lithiumion batteries. Different SiOC ceramics are prepared by pyrolysis (1000 °C and 1400 °C under controlled argon atmosphere) of polysiloxanes ceramic precursors. Preceramic polymers are synthesized using the sol–gel method. Phenyltriethoxysilane (PhTES) and methyltriethoxysilane (MTES) have been used as starting precursors and mixed with...

Looking through the past: better knowledge retention for generative replay in continual learning
PublikacjaIn this work, we improve the generative replay in a continual learning setting to perform well on challenging scenarios. Because of the growing complexity of continual learning tasks, it is becoming more popular, to apply the generative replay technique in the feature space instead of image space. Nevertheless, such an approach does not come without limitations. In particular, we notice the degradation of the continually trained...

Accurate Lightweight Calibration Methods for Mobile Low-Cost Particulate Matter Sensors
PublikacjaMonitoring air pollution is a critical step towards improving public health, particularly when it comes to identifying the primary air pollutants that can have an impact on human health. Among these pollutants, particulate matter (PM) with a diameter of up to 2.5 μ m (or PM2.5) is of particular concern, making it important to continuously and accurately monitor pollution related to PM. The emergence of mobile low-cost PM sensors...

Effects of consecutive apneas on pial artery pulsation and subarachnoid width in healthy subjects
PublikacjaHypercapnia is known to dilate the pial artery, disrupt cerebral autoregulation and increase pial artery pulsation. The cerebral blood flow velocity (CBFV) response to hypercapnia is biphasic. Below the threshold for the increase of blood pressure (BP) with carbon dioxide partial pressure (pCO2), the CBFV measurement reflects vascular reactivity to pCO2 alone at a constant BP. Above this threshold, the CBFV measurement provides...

What matters most to patients? On the Core Determinants of Patient Experience from Free Text Feedback
PublikacjaFree-text feedback from patients is increasingly used for improving the quality of healthcare services and systems. A major reason for the growing interest in harnessing free-text feedback is the belief that it provides richer information about what patients want and care about. The use of computational approaches such as structural topic modelling for analysing large unstructured textual data such as free-text feedback from patients...

Wavelet transform analysis to assess oscillations in pial artery pulsation at the human cardiac frequency
PublikacjaPial artery adjustments to changes in blood pressure (BP)may last only seconds in humans. Using a novelmethod called near-infrared transillumination backscattering sounding (NIR-T/BSS) that allows for the non-invasive measurement of pial artery pulsation (cc-TQ) in humans, we aimed to assess the relationship between spontaneous oscillations in BP and cc-TQ at frequencies between 0.5 Hz and 5 Hz. We hypothesized that analysis of...
