Isolation of xanthone and benzophenone derivatives from Cyclopia genistoides (L.) Vent. (honeybush) and their pro-apoptotic activity on synoviocytes from patients with rheumatoid arthritis
PublicationA fast and efficient method for the isolation of the C-glucosidated xanthones mangiferin and isomangiferin from the South-African plant Cyclopia genistoides was developed for the first time. Two benzophenone derivatives: 3-C-β-glucosides of maclurin and iriflophenone, were isolated from C. genistoides extracts using semi-preparative. The structures of the compounds were determined by 1D and 2D NMR experiments and/or LC-DAD-ESI–MS.

Correlation between partial inhibition of hydrogen evolution using thiourea and catalytic activity of AB5-type hydrogen storage alloy towards borohydride electrooxidation
PublicationDirect borohydride fuel cells (DBFCs) are devices which directly convert the chemical energy stored in the borohydride ion and oxidant into electrical energy as a result of redox reactions. Unfortunately, a significant amount of fuel is lost as a result of the undesirable hydrolysis reaction. The selection of an efficient borohydride hydrolysis inhibitor requires detailed knowledge regarding the interaction mechanism between the...

Molecular basis of the low activity of antitumor anthracenediones, mitoxantrone and ametantrone, in oxygen radical generation catalyzed by NADH dehydrogenase. Enzymatic and molecular modelling studies
PublicationSyntetyczne antracenodionowe leki przeciwnowotworowe, w przeciwieństwie do antybiotyków antracyklinowych, charakteryzują się słabym wytwarzaniem wolnych rodników w układach z dehydrogenazą NADH. Wyniki prezentowane w artykule wskazują, że ani potencjał redukcyjny, ani konformacja łańcuchów bocznych, ani energie orbitali granicznych (LUMO i HOMO) nie determinują zdolności antracenedionów do stymulacji wytwarzania reaktywnych form...

Kinetic characterization of hydrogen sulfide inhibition of suspended anammox biomass from a membrane bioreactor
PublicationThe inhibition effects of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) on anammox-enriched biomass from a laboratory membrane reactor were analyzed in a series of batch respirometric experiments. The determined half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC50) was 4.67 mg H2S-S L−1 at the constant pH = 7.0 and the total sulfide concentration varying between 1 and 15 mg TS-S L−1. In another test, the IC50 was found to be 4.25 mg H2S-S L−1 under a constant...

The impact of training and neurotrophins on functional recovery after spinal cord transection: cellular and molecular mechanisms contributing to motor improvement
PublicationBeneficial effects of locomotor training on the functional recovery after complete transection of the spinal cord indicate that in chronic spinal animals spontaneous recovery processes are enhanced and shaped by the training. The mechanisms of that use-dependent improvement are still not fully understood. This review tackles three aspects of this issue: (1) neurochemical attributes of functional improvement...
