Technical fabrics in costruction of large scale roofs - numerical and experimental aspects
PublicationDesigning and construction of textile hanging roofs is the challenging subject for engineers. This type of structure needs geometrically and very often also physically non-linear calculations. Due to different behaviour of two families of threads (warp and weft), which during deformation can change the angle between their directions, they require special constitutive modelling. Also the loading of hanging roofs is very special....

Reconstruction of 3D structure of positive corona streamer by local methods
PublicationThe computer algorithms were used for reconstruction of streamer 3D structure. We propose the 3D tree structure model of corona discharge streamer composed with nodes and edges between chosen couples of nodes, which enables easy computation of some important parameters ofstreamers. The 3D model can be derived directly from two projection images by global methods like evolutionary searching or particle simulations. In this paper...

Modeling variable curvature on the turnout diverging track length
PublicationThe paper presents three variants of variable curvature application on the entire length of the turnout diverging track. One linear and two nonlinear curvature cases: described the function of C1 and C0 class were considered. It turned out that both linear curve and the function of C1 class requires a significant (even twice) length of diverging track extending with respect to the base turnout. The curvature described by the function...

Buckling of thin-walled columns accounting for initial geometrical imperfections
PublicationThe paper is devoted to the effect of some geometrical imperfections on the critical buckling load of axially compressed thin-walled I-columns. The analytical formulas for the critical torsional and flexural buckling loads accounting for the initial curvature of the column axis or the twist angle respectively are derived. The classical assumptions of theory of thin-walled beams with non-deformable cross-sections are adopted. The...

Complex multidisciplinary optimization of turbine blading systems
PublicationThe paper describes the methods and results of direct optimization of turbine blading systems using a software package Opti_turb. The final shape of the blading is obtained from minimizing the objective function, which is the total energy loss of the stage, including the leaving energy. The current values of the objective function are found from 3D RANS computations (from a code FlowER) of geometries changed during the process...

Determination of the shape of the CFGFT cylindrical column based on laboratory tests
PublicationAnalyses were carried out on glass-fibre-reinforced polymer tube columns with reference to laboratory tests. The angles of the glass fibre beams were 20◦, 55◦ and 85◦. The study employed non-classical operational calculus. Various modulated harmonic signal shapes were considered for columns and tubes at buckling. The buckling loads were assessed and compared for different models.

Efficient Simulation-Based Global Antenna Optimization Using Characteristic Point Method and Nature-Inspired Metaheuristics
PublicationAntenna structures are designed nowadays to fulfil rigorous demands, including multi-band operation, where the center frequencies need to be precisely allocated at the assumed targets while improving other features, such as impedance matching. Achieving this requires simultaneous optimization of antenna geometry parameters. When considering multimodal problems or if a reasonable initial design is not at hand, one needs to rely...

The study of structure and surface morphology of lithium titanate sol-gel derived thin films
PublicationIn this paper the structure and the surface morphology of lithium titanate (LTO) thin films are presented. Nanocrystalline thin films were prepared by sol–gel method. To examine the influence of the annealing time on as-prepared films crystallization, the coatings were heated at different temperatures in the range of 500 °C–600 °C for 10, 20, 40 and 80 h. The structure of the obtained material was investigated using the X-ray diffraction...

Recent Developments in Data-Assisted Modeling of Flexible Proteins
PublicationMany proteins can fold into well-defined conformations. However, intrinsically-disordered proteins (IDPs) do not possess a defined structure. Moreover, folded multi-domain proteins often digress into alternative conformations. Collectively, the conformational dynamics enables these proteins to fulfill specific functions. Thus, most experimental observables are averaged over the conformations that constitute an ensemble. In this...

Decrease in Photovoltaic Module Efficiency Due to Deposition of Pollutants
PublicationThe deposition of pollutants on the surface of photovoltaic (PV) modules reduce the efficiency that can be achieved in given climatic conditions. This results in the loss of energy yield obtained from the solar installation. A number of factors determine the scale of this problem. The first of these is the amount of impurities deposited, the associated amount of precipitation, and the speed and direction of the wind. A second aspect...

A method to synthesise groove cam Geneva mechanisms with increased dwell period
PublicationThe present study develops a method to synthesise the groove cam Geneva mechanism with increased dwell period. The main condition of the synthesis is to provide the desired law of motion of the wheel. Additional synthesis conditions are the limitation of the maximum pressure angle and the limitation of the minimum curvature radius of the cam profile. Unlike the conventional Geneva mechanisms, the synthesised groove cam Geneva mechanisms...

Basing on some earlier studies, solutions provided with a circular arc in the mid-zone, and in the extreme regions with segments of non-linear curvature of equal length and zero curvature at the start and end of the turnout, have been assumed as models. The most advantageous type of curvature has been...
