Investor confidence and high financial literacy jointly shape investments in risky assets
PublikacjaHouseholds consistently invest less in equities and bonds than predicted by economic theory. We explain this from a behavioral economics perspective and distributional analysis using rich US survey microdata. We find that higher investor self-confidence in her financial abilities and financial literacy jointly increase the probability of investing in equities. Conditional on participation, confidence in the macroeconomy additionally...

Frequency measurement research with weight averaging of pulse output signal of voltage-to-frequency converter
PublikacjaThe paper presents the essence and investigation of the efficiency of weight averaging of a pulse output signal of voltage-to-frequency converter. The effect of counting and the influence of interference on the result of weight averaging of frequency modulated pulses are analyzed. It is shown that from the point of view of counting error reduction, the best are polynomial weight functions. In the case of high interferences whose...

Logical Interface for Soft Handover – an effective scheme of handovers in Proxy Mobile IPv6
PublikacjaMultimedia services are currently commonly available on mobile devices. Due to networks' convergence and migration to all-IP networks, mobility management at network layer is required. Moreover, nowadays it is popular to equip mobile devices with more than one wireless interface. Thus, soft handovers can be implemented, which means that an existing connection is removed after a new one is established. Usage of the Logical Interfaces...

Quantitative Storytelling in the Making of a Composite Indicator
PublikacjaThe reasons for and against composite indicators are briefly reviewed, as well as the available theories for their construction. After noting the strong normative dimension of these measures—which ultimately aim to ‘tell a story’, e.g. to promote the social discovery of a particular phenomenon, we inquire whether a less partisan use of a composite indicator can be proposed by allowing more latitude in the framing of its construction....

Sensor Position Estimation Method for IoT Using Mobile Reference Node
PublikacjaThe paper proposes an innovative method of locating objects for the Internet of Things (IoT). The proposed method allows the position of a fixed measuring sensor (MS) to be estimated using one mobile base station with a known position moving around the MS. The mathematical analysis of the method, and three algorithms — Newton’s (NA), gradient descent (GD) and genetic (GA) — for solving the system of non-linear positional equations...

Method for Clustering of Brain Activity Data Derived from EEG Signals
PublikacjaA method for assessing separability of EEG signals associated with three classes of brain activity is proposed. The EEG signals are acquired from 23 subjects, gathered from a headset consisting of 14 electrodes. Data are processed by applying Discrete Wavelet Transform (DWT) for the signal analysis and an autoencoder neural network for the brain activity separation. Processing involves 74 wavelets from 3 DWT families: Coiflets,...

WHAT DRIVES CROSS-COUNTRY DIFFERENCES IN EXPORT VARIETY? A BILATERAL PANEL APPROACH
PublikacjaA worldwide event like the 2020 Coronavirus outbreak can only reinforce the interest in modelling trade diversification as a key factor in countries’ vulnerability to external shocks. This paper adopts a detailed relative framework to study the determinants of product-level export variety in a large bilateral panel of developing and developed economies (16,770 country pairs in the period 1988–2014). We find that country pairs characterized...

The respective absolute value estimators are recognised as exceptionally insensitive to large measurement faults or other defects in the processed data, whereas the classical least squares procedure appears to be completely impractical for processing the data contaminated with such parasitic distortions. Since...

Some accelerationist remarks on Marcuse’s drives theory and his dialectics of civilization
PublikacjaMarcuse’s theory of civilization offers a promising Freud-Marx synthesis. His approach, best articulated in Eros and Civilization, aims at a thorough reformulation of the Freudian drive doctrine to render it more historical and concatenate it to the problem of structural violence and the institutionalized (and internalized) mechanism of repression. I claim that the said reformulation provides a cornerstone for Marcuse’s highly...
