Ultimate compressive strength assessment of uncleaned and cleaned corroded plates with locked crack
PublicationThe work presented here investigates the structural response of cleaned corroded plates, subjected to compressive load in the presence of a locked crack, where the change of mechanical properties as a result of corrosion development and the cleaning process is also accounted for. A Finite Element model for assessing the compressive strength, considering geometric and material nonlinearities, is developed, and the analysed plates...

Integrating Art into Places in Transition - Rose Kennedy Greenway in Boston as a Case Study
PublicationAmong the many projects realized in public spaces, some are truly unique – and these are the ones that build the identity of a place. The aim of this paper is to examine how integrating art and cultural strategies into public space can enhance and reinforce the sense of a place. Particular attention is devoted to urban spaces that we call “places in transition”, where public art improves the city’s imaginative capacity, enlivens...

Constitutive Modelling of Knitted Abdominal Implants in Numerical Simulations of Repaired Hernia Mechanics
PublicationThe paper presents a numerical approach to describe mechanical behavior of anisotropic textile material, which is a selected abdominal prosthesis. Two constitutive nonlinear concepts are compared. In the first one the material is considered composed from two families of threads (dense net model) and in the second one the material is homogeneous but anisotropic (as proposed by Gassel, Ogden, Holzapfel). Parameters of both models...

Advanced numerical modelling for predicting residual compressive strength of corroded stiffened plates
PublicationAn advanced methodology for predicting the residual compressive strength of corroded stiffened plates is developed here using the non-linear finite element method. The non-uniform loss of a plate thickness is accounted for on a macro-scale. In contrast, mechanical properties are changed using the constitutive model to reflect the corrosion degradation impact on a micro-scale. Three different stiffened plate thicknesses are considered,...

Improvements to the two-phase sandwich method for calculating the melting points of pure metals
PublicationThe thermophysical properties of metal alloys are often investigated via molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. An exact and reliable estimation of the thermophysical parameters from the MD data requires a properly and carefullyelaborated methodology. In this paper, an improved two-phase sandwich method for the determination of the metal meltingtemperature is proposed, based on the solid-liquid equilibrium theory. The new method was...

Fast Simulation-Driven Design of a Planar UWB Dipole Antenna with an Integrated Balun
PublicationThe paper presents a design of an ultra-wideband (UWB) antenna with an integrated balun. A fully planar balun interfacing the microstrip input of the structure to the coplanar stripline (CPS) input of the dipole antenna is introduced. The electromagnetic (EM) model of the structure includes the dipole, the balun, and the microstrip input to account for interactions over the UWB band. The EM model is adjusted for low reflection...

Modification of current-voltage characteristics of planar organic systems by nm-thick interlayer
PublicationEffect of nm-thick interlayer of copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) or perylene dye (MePTCDI) on current-voltage characteristics of planar organic systems is discussed in the work. The MePTCDI layer strongly limits injection of holes from ITO into CuPc, while CuPc limits injection of electrons from ITO into MePTCDI. In the systems with CuPc/MePTCDI heterojunction an explicit photovoltaic effect occurs.
