On the effective properties of foams in the framework of the couple stress theory
PublicationIn the framework of the couple stress theory, we discuss the effective elastic properties of a metal open-cell foam. In this theory, we have the couple stress tensor, but the microrotations are fully described by displacements. To this end, we performed calculations for a representative volume element which give the matrices of elastic moduli relating stress and stress tensors with strain and microcurvature tensors.

Functional fluorine-doped tin oxide coating for opto-electrochemical label-free biosensors
PublicationSensors operating in multiple domains, such as optical and electrochemical, offer properties making biosensing more effective than those working in a single domain. To combine such domains in one sensing device, materials offering a certain set of properties are required. Fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) thin film is discussed in this work as functional optically for guiding lossy modes and simultaneously electrochemically, i.e....

The Latest Advances in Wireless Communication in Aviation, Wind Turbines and Bridges
PublicationPresent-day technologies used in SHM (Structural Health Monitoring) systems in many implementations are based on wireless sensor networks (WSN). In the context of the continuous development of these systems, the costs of the elements that form the monitoring system are decreasing. In this situation, the challenge is to select the optimal number of sensors and the network architecture, depending on the wireless system’s other parameters...

Magnetic field microsensor based on GaAs MESFET
PublicationA novel concept of the drain separation design in a horizontally-split-drain GaAs MAGFET sensor, based on epitaxial layer growth, was developed. Proper choice of GaAs/AlAs/GaAs epitaxial layer sequence provided good electrical isolation between the drain regions. The measured leakage current between the drain regions was in the range of nA for up to 2V drain voltage bias difference. Performed analytical and numerical calculations...

Monitoring of single-side lap grinding with electroplated tools
PublicationThe results presented in the paper show that utilising microphones as audible sound sensors is a suitable approach for monitoring a single-side lap grinding process due to the low levels of noise generated by the drives of a machine tool. The results confirm that sound signal analysis is a feasible and relatively simple method to monitor a lap grinding process with the use of an audible sound sensor. Proposed method can be used...

On instabilities and post-buckling of piezomagnetic and flexomagnetic nanostructures
PublicationWe focus on the mechanical strength of piezomagnetic beam-like nanosize sensors during post-buckling. An effective flexomagnetic property is also taken into account. The modelled sensor is selected to be a Euler-Bernoulli type beam. Long-range interactions between atoms result in a mathematical model based on the nonlocal strain gradient elasticity approach (NSGT). Due to possible large deformations within a post-buckling phenomenon,...

Estimation of Average Speed of Road Vehicles by Sound Intensity Analysis
PublicationConstant monitoring of road traffic is important part of modern smart city systems. The proposed method estimates average speed of road vehicles in the observation period, using a passive acoustic vector sensor. Speed estimation based on sound intensity analysis is a novel approach to the described problem. Sound intensity in two orthogonal axes is measured with a sensor placed alongside the road. Position of the apparent sound...

An electronic nose for quantitative determination of gas concentrations
PublicationThe practical application of human nose for fragrance recognition is severely limited by the fact that our sense of smell is subjective and gets tired easily. Consequen tly, there is considerable need for an instrument that can be a substitution of the human sense of smell. Electronic nose devices from the mid 1980s are used in growing number of applications. They comprise an array of several electrochemical gas sensors...

Nowa metoda syntezy cyklicznych pseudopeptydów wykorzystująca 1,3-dioksadion jako odczynnik sprzęgający- badania rozpoznawcze
PublicationCykliczne peptydy odgrywają ważną rolę w wielu procesach biochemicznych. Do szerokiej grupy tych związków zaliczamy wiele znanych powszechnie leków m.in. wankomycynę [2] - antybiotyk glikopeptydowy o działaniu bakteriobójczym, czy też cyklosporynę [3]. Chemiczna synteza cyklicznych peptydów to proces wieloetapowy i nierzadko kłopotliwy. Spośród czynników będących powodem nieopłacalności produkcji metodą chemiczną można wymienić...
