Reactions on the surface of the implant under the influence of biofilm
PublikacjaThe contact of a biomaterial with the biological environment in in vitro and in vivo tests leads to the production of a particular ecosystem in which the active roles perform both, the material surface and the extracellular matrix protein forming a biofilm. Proteins affect cell and bacteria adhesion processes, biological activity of cells and activation of inflammatory response. The knowledge of the reaction mechanisms active on...

Excited-state proton transfer and geminate recombination in the molecular cage of β-cyclodextrin
PublikacjaExcited-state proton transfer and geminate recombination in aqueous heptakis(2,6-di-O-methyl)-β-cyclodextrin have been compared with those in water by monitoring the photoinduced prototropic tautomerization of 6-hydroxyquinoline, which occurs via forming anionic intermediate. Enol deprotonation decelerates by 18 times whereas its reverse process accelerates slightly with encapsulation. The imine protonation of the intermediate...

Performance and Stability in H2S of SrFe0.75Mo0.25O3-δ as Electrode in Proton Ceramic Fuel Cells
PublikacjaThe H2S-tolerance of SrFe0.75Mo0.25O3-δ (SFM) electrodes has been investigated in symmetric proton ceramic fuel cells (PCFC) with BaZr0.8Ce0.1Y0.1O3-δ (BZCY81) electrolyte. The ionic conductivity of the electrolyte under wet reducing conditions was found to be insignificantly affected in the presence of up to 5000 ppm H2S. The fuel cell exhibited an OCV of about 0.9 V at 700 °C, which dropped to about 0.6 V and 0.4 V upon exposure...

Molecular mechanism of proton-coupled ligand translocation by the bacterial efflux pump EmrE
PublikacjaThe current surge in bacterial multi-drug resistance (MDR) is one of the largest challenges to public health, threatening to render ineffective many therapies we rely on for treatment of serious infections. Understanding different factors that contribute to MDR is hence crucial from the global “one health” perspective. In this contribution, we focus on the prototypical broad-selectivity proton-coupled antiporter EmrE, one of the...

The effect of high pressure at subzero temperature on proteins solubility, drip loss and texture of fish (cod and salmon) and mammal’s (pork and beef) meat
PublikacjaOne of the possibilities of using high pressure technique in inactivation of microorganism is conducting this process at subzero temperature. However, for its practical application in meat preservation the appropriate properties of meat should be kept. Therefore, the aim of this work was to examine the effect of pressure at subzero temperature (without freezing of water) on proteins and texture of mammal’s and cold-adapted fish...

Just look at to open it up: A biometric verification facility for password autofill to protect electronic documents
PublikacjaElectronic documents constitute specific units of information, and protecting them against unauthorized access is a challenging task. This is because a password protected document may be stolen from its host computer or intercepted while on transfer and exposed to unlimited offline attacks. The key issue is, therefore, making document passwords hard to crack. We propose to augment a common text password authentication interface...

Inhibition of amyloid fibril formation of hen egg white lysozyme by trimethylamine N-oxide at low pH
PublikacjaIn vitro inhibition of the formation of fibrous aggregates of proteins (amyloids) has gained increasing attention due to the number of diseases associated with protein misfolding and fibrillation. An interesting group of compounds for which pronounced activity against this phenomenon can be expected consists of low molecular weight substances (osmolytes) which have the ability to change protein stability. Here we investigate the...

The bile salt content of human bile impacts on simulated intestinal proteolysis of β-lactoglobulin
PublikacjaThe gastrointestinal hydrolysis of food proteins has been portrayed in scientific literature to predominantly depend on the activity and specificity of proteolytic enzymes. Human bile has not been considered to facilitate proteolysis in the small intestine, but rather to assist in intestinal lipolysis. However, human bile can potentially influence proteins that are largely resistant to gastric digestion, and which are mainly hydrolysed...
