Interdisciplinary Design Teams in Poland - Architecture as a Tool for Preventing Hospital-Acquired Infections
PublicationHospital-acquired infections pose a problem, which directly affects the safe usage of healthcare facilities. On a global scale, the level of hospital-acquired infections (HAI) is estimated to affect 5–15% of those hospitalised. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that, on an annual basis, procedures preventing hospital-acquired infections consume 80 billion dollars [1]. In this context, it becomes important to create...

Three-dimensional representation of geographic data in a Web-based GIS
PublicationPresenting geographic data in a web environment has been a long standing problem. For many years the low performance of web browsers has limited the visualization of spatial data to only two dimensions. More recently, the introduction of open standards for 3D acceleration of web applications sparked the emergence of new methods of presenting three-dimensional data in a web browser without using third-party extensions. However,...

A novel method for archiving multibeam sonar data with emphasis on efficient record size reduction and storage
PublicationOver the past few years considerable advances in sonar technology, spatial positioning capabilities and computer processing power have lead to significant improvements in mapping, imaging and technologies of seafloor exploration. Recently, modern multibeam echosounder systems (MBES) capable of recording backscatter data for the whole water column, not just for the seabed, have become available thus providing data allowing for...

Merging extremum seeking and self-optimizing narrowband interference canceller - overdetermined case
PublicationActive cancellation systems rely on destructive interference to achieve rejection of unwanted disturbances entering the system of interest. Typical practical applications of this method employ a simple single input, single output arrangement. However, when a spatial wavefield (e.g. acoustic noise or vibration) needs to be controlled, multichannel active cancellation systems arise naturally. Among these, the so-called overdetermined...

The green waterfront of a city. Where are the limits of good planning? Gdansk case
PublicationThe aim of the article is to present the role of green public areas of waterfronts in shaping the image of cities, and the threats to such landscape which may be caused by wrong planning decisions. The case study of Gdansk sea-shore area in Poland is presented as an example to illustrate the values and potential of the waterfront landscape which can be easily destroyed by inadequate spatial development. Some theoretical studies...

PLANOWANIE BEZPIECZNYCH I „ZIELONYCH” SYSTEMÓW KOMUNIKACYJNYCH
PublicationIn order to achieve balanced forms of urban infrastructure, which ensure comfort, safety and spatial order, when designing new solutions it is necessary to adopt a multi-facet approach which will combine everything that the local residents need but will respond harmoniously to the existing cultural landscape. It is therefore necessary to work out complex undertakings for the sake of planning and developing urban space. Coherent...

Treatment of landfill leachate in a constructed free water surface wetland system over a decade – Identification of disturbance in process behaviour and removal of eutrophying substances and organic material
PublicationAn 8 ha free water surface wetland system in Örebro, Sweden, which has sediment traps followed by 10 ponds for treatment of landfill leachate in the methanogenic stage, was studied from 2003 to 2012. The wetland was irregularly loaded and the leachate characteristics showed high temporal and spatial variability, so Multivariate Statistical Process Control was chosen as the diagnostic tool for detecting anomalies prior to assessing...

FDTD Method for Electromagnetic Simulations in Media Described by Time-Fractional Constitutive Relations
PublicationIn this paper, the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method is derived for electromagnetic simulations in media described by the time-fractional (TF) constitutive relations. TF Maxwell’s equations are derived based on these constitutive relations and the Grünwald–Letnikov definition of a fractional derivative. Then the FDTD algorithm, which includes memory effects and energy dissipation of the considered media, is introduced....

Extending loophole-free nonlocal correlations to arbitrarily large distances
PublicationQuantum theory allows spatially separated observers to share nonlocal correlations, which enable them to accomplish classically inconceivable information processing and cryptographic feats. However, the distances over which nonlocal correlations can be realized remain severely limited due to their high fragility to noise and high threshold detection efficiencies. To enable loophole- free nonlocality across large distances, we introduce...

A city is not a tree: a multi-city study on street network and urban life
PublicationChristopher Alexander, a British-American scholar, differentiated an old (natural) city from a new (planned) one by structure. The former resembles a “semilattice”, or a complex system encompassing many interconnected sub-systems. The latter is shaped in a graph-theoretical “tree”, which lacks the structural complexity as its sub-systems are compartmentalized into a single hierarchy. This structural distinction explains why, or...

Dedicated scheduling of tasks to minimize mean flow time
PublicationThis paper investigates the complexity of scheduling biprocessor tasks on dedicated processors to minimize mean flow time. Since the general problem is strongly NP-hard, we assume some restrictions on task lengths and the structure of associated scheduling graphs. Of particular interest are acyclic graphs. In this way we identify a borderline between NP-hard and polynomially solvable special cases.

The importance of the shape of the protein–water interface of a kinesin motor domain for dynamics of the surface atoms of the protein
PublicationA single kinesin motor domain immersed in water has been investigated using molecular dynamics. It has been found that local properties of water in the solvation shell change along with the nature of the neighboring protein surface. However, a detailed analysis leads to the conclusion that the geometrical features of hydrogen bonds and overall structure of kinesin hydration water are not very different from bulk water. The local...
