Does migration lead to economic convergence in an enlarged European market?
PublicationThis paper examines the relationship between migration and convergence for the enlarged internal market of the European Union (EU27) for the period 1990-2007. The impact of migration on growth is estimated in two ways: by including the migration rate in a growth regression and examining its impact on the convergence coefficient; and from the actual coefficient on migration, which can be interpreted as the effect of migration on...

Does one currency mean one price? An analysis of the euro effect on price dispersion and convergence
PublicationThis paper examines price differentials in the European Union to investigate whether the European Monetary Union has lowered the degree of price dispersion in the euro zone and increased the speed of price convergence. Both euro effects are evaluated using difference-in-difference methodology. Applied to the issue of introducing a single currency, the euro effects identified are the estimated differences in price dispersion and...

Reducing income inequalities through government expenditures on education. Evidence for European countries Piotr PłatkowskiORCID Icon &Ewa LechmanORCID Icon
PublicationThis study examines the role of government spending on education in mitigating income inequalities. The study uses dynamic panel regressions to assess the evolution of education expenditures and income inequality in the sample of 30 European countries between 1995 and 2018. Our findings show that increases in government spending on education positively affect income inequality reduction. The impact was more substantial in case...

Extendable Safety and Security Ontology
PublicationSecurity plays an increasingly important role in our everyday life, and research and users of computer systems point out that the need arises for a common, formalised model capable of integrating different solutions. In this paper we show that an ontology can be designed and created in a way that will make it suitable for interoperability and integration. A security and safety ontology and the methodology for creating a common...

The UK's banking system as financial hub for Islamic banking
PublicationThis paper examines the phenomenon of London as "the Islamic banking hub". It contends that London has become not only an international centre for Islamic finance, but also that there is big interest and demand for Islamic banking products. The authors are also positive that Islamic banking may be a certain solution for the problems that Europe has been suffering since 2007 when the global debt crisis started. Our intention is...

Magnetic Field Generated by Short Circuit Current in the 110 kV Power System
PublicationElectric fields within tissues induced by magnetic fields including transients or short-term peaks should not be time averaged and be regarded as instantaneous values as established in the ICNIRP (International Commission on Non - Ionizing Radiation Protection) guidelines. Measurements of power lines magnetic fields with regard to human beings exposure are carried out typically with maximum current load at current balance condition...

Synthesis and steroid sulfatase inhibitory activities of N-alkanoyl tyramine phosphates and thiophosphates
PublicationA series of phosphate and thiophosphate analogs based on the frameworks of N-alkanoyl tyramines have been synthesized and biologically evaluated. Their binding modes have been modeled using docking techniques. The inhibitory effects of the synthesized compounds were tested on STS isolated from the human placenta as well as the MCF-7, MDA-MB-231 and SkBr3 cancer cell lines. Most of the new STS inhibitors possessed potent activity...

Structural Assessment of Reinforced Concrete Beams Incorporating Waste Plastic Straws
PublicationThe behavior of reinforced concrete beams containing fibers made of waste plastic straws (WPSs) under the three point bending test is examined. The effect of WPS fiber addition on the compressive and split tensile strength is reported. Four concrete mixes were prepared. The control mix PS-0 had a proportion of 1 cement: 1 sand: 2 coarse aggregate and a water cement ratio of 0.4. In the other three mixes PS-0.5, PS-1.5 and PS-3,...

Conserved motifs of MutL proteins
PublicationtThe MutL protein is best known for its function in DNA mismatch repair (MMR). However, there isevidence to suggest that MutL is not only the linker connecting the functions of MutS and MutH in MMR,but that it also participates in other repair systems, such as Very Short Patch (VSP), Base Excision (BER)and Nucleotide Excision Repair (NER). This study set out to identify the most highly conserved aminoacid sequence motifs in MutL...

Teloxantron inhibits the processivity of telomerase with preferential DNA damage on telomeres
PublicationTelomerase reactivation is one of the hallmarks of cancer, which plays an important role in cellular immortalization and the development and progression of the tumor. Chemical telomerase inhibitors have been shown to trigger replicative senescence and apoptotic cell death both in vitro and in vivo. Due to its upregulation in various cancers, telomerase is considered a potential target in cancer therapy. In this study, we identified...

Convenient and efficient synthesis of functionalized unsymmetrical alkynyl sulfides
PublicationWe developed a simple and efficient method for the synthesis of functionalized unsymmetrical alkynyl sulfides under mild conditions in good yields. The designed method is based on the reaction of 5,5-dimethyl-2-thioxo-1,3,2-dioxaphosphorinan-2-disulfanyl derivatives with lithium acetylides. The developed method allows the preparation of unsymmetrical alkynyl sulfides bearing additional hydroxyl, carboxyl, or amino functionalities.

Thermal Decomposition of Carbamoyl Meldrum’s Acids: A Starting Point for the Preparation of 1,3-Oxazine Derivatives
PublicationThe ability to undergo [4 + 2] versus [2 + 2] cycloaddition was under investigation for ketenes thermally generated from carbamoyl Meldrum’s acid. Usually, 1,3-oxazino-5-carbamoylo-4,6-diones are formed when carbamoyl Meldrum’s acid reacts with imine. However, in some cases, a reaction takes an unexpected course, leading to the formation of tetraponerines alkaloids derivatives or cyclic iminoethers.

Ground-based, Hyperbolic Radiolocation System with Spread Spectrum Signal - AEGIR
PublicationThe most popular radiolocation systems in the world (at present), is the American GPS (Global Positioning System). It is managed by the Department of Defense and there is always the possibility of the occasional inaccuracies or deliberate introduction of errors that prevent its use by the special services or armies of other countries than the U.S.A. This situation has spawned the need to develop an autonomous, ground-based radiolocation...

Numerical Characterization of Thresholds for the Focusing 1d Nonlinear Schrödinger Equation
PublicationThe focusing nonlinear Schrödinger equation arises in various physical phenomena and it is therefore of interest to determine mathematical conditions on the initial data that guarantee whether the corresponding solution will blow up in finite time or exist globally in time. We focus on solutions to the mass‐supercritical nonlinear Schrödinger equation (1) in 1D case. In particular, we investigate numerical thresholds between blow...

The Niching Mechanism in the Evolutionary Method of Path Planning
PublicationThis paper presents the concept of the niching mechanism in the evolutionary method of path planning. The problem is considered based on the example of a ship path planning. In this method the diversity of individuals is tested in respect to their physical distance, not the fitness function value. The researches show that such an approach increases effectiveness of solution space exploration, what results in a final solution with...
