A new look at the statistical identification of nonstationary systems
PublicationThe paper presents a new, two-stage approach to identification of linear time-varying stochastic systems, based on the concepts of preestimation and postfiltering. The proposed preestimated parameter trajectories are unbiased but have large variability. Hence, to obtain reliable estimates of system parameters, the preestimated trajectories must be further filtered (postfiltered). It is shown how one can design and optimize such...

Post-comatose patients with minimal consciousness tend to preserve reading comprehension skills but neglect syntax and spelling
PublicationModern eye tracking technology provides a means for communication with patients suffering from disorders of consciousness (DoC) or remaining in locked-in-state. However, being able to use an eye tracker for controlling text-based contents by such patients requires preserved reading ability in the first place. To our knowledge, this aspect, although of great social importance, so far has seemed to be neglected. In the paper, we...

Variable-structure algorithm for identification of quasi-periodically varying systems
PublicationThe paper presents a variable-structure version of a generalized notchfiltering (GANF) algorithm. Generalized notch filters are used for identification of quasi-periodically varying dynamic systems and can be considered an extension, to the system case, of classical adaptive notch filters. The proposed algorithm is a cascade of two GANF filters: a multiple-frequency "precise" filter bank, used for precise system tracking, and a...

Nonlinear fuzzy control of the dissolved oxygen in activated sludge processes
PublicationWastewater treatment plant is generally a complex, multivariable, time varying and nonlinear large scale industrial system. Moreover, interactions between the components are very strong. The dissolved oxygen tracking problem is one of the most complex and fundamental issues of biological processes. Air for the aerated tanks is supplied by aeration system (blowers, pipes, diffusers). It is a complex dynamic system. The new control...

Multistage generalized adaptive notch filter with improved accuracy
PublicationGeneralized adaptive notch filters (GANFs) are estimators of coefficients of quasi-periodically time-varying systems. Current state of the art GANFs can deliver highly accurate estimates of system variations’ frequency, but underperform in terms of accuracy of the coefficient estimates. The paper proposes a novel multistage GANF with accuracy improved in this aspect. The processing pipeline consists of three stages. The preliminary...

An extension to the FEEDB Multimodal Database of Facial Expressions and Emotions
PublicationFEEDB is a multimodal database that contains recordings of people expressing different emotions, captured by using a Microsoft Kinect sensor. Data were originally provided in the device’s proprietary format (XED), requiring both the Microsoft Kinect Studio application and a Kinect sensor attached to the system to use the files. In this paper, we present an extension of the database. For a selection of recordings, we also provide...

A Time Delay Controller Included Terminal Sliding Mode and Fuzzy Gain Tuning for Underwater Vehicle-Manipulator Systems
PublicationAn improved Time Delay Control (TDC) method for an Underwater Vehicle-Manipulator System (UVMS) is proposed. The proposed controller consists of three terms: a time-delay-estimation term that cancels nonlinearities of the UVMS dynamics, a Terminal Sliding Mode (TSM) term that provides a fast response and a PID term that reduces the tracking error. In addition the proposed controller uses fuzzy rules to adaptively tune the gains...

The Influence of Stretch Rod Speed on the Relationship between Preblown Bottle Aesthetic Quality and Final Blown Bottle Thickness Profile in Stretch Blow Molding from Preform Process
PublicationFrom a mechanical point of view, the aesthetic quality of preblown PET bottles and thickness profile of final blown PET bottles manufactured in ISBM process are determined by mechanical and thermal response of blown preforms. Generalized adaptive notch smoothers for real-valued signals and systems
PublicationSystems with quasi-periodically varying coefficients can be tracked using the algorithms known as generalized adaptive notch filters (GANFs). GANF algorithms can be considered an extension, to the system case, of classical adaptive notch filters (ANFs). We show that estimation accuracy of the existing algorithms, as well as their robustness to the choice of design parameters, can be considerably improved by means of compensating...

Detection of vehicles stopping in restricted zones in video from surveillance cameras
PublicationAn algorithm for detection of vehicles that stop in restricted areas, e.g. excluded by traffic rules, is proposed. Classic approaches based on object tracking are inefficient in high traffic scenes because of tracking errors caused by frequent object merging and splitting. The proposed algorithm uses the background subtraction results for detection of moving objects, then pixels belonging to moving objects are tested for stability....
