High Temperature Corrosion Evaluation of Porous Hastelloy X Alloy in Air and Humidified Hydrogen Atmospheres
PublicationIn this work a commercially available porous Hastelloy X alloy is characterized in terms of high temperature corrosion resistance. The alloy was oxidized in the temperature range from 500C to 900C in air and humidified hydrogen for 100 hours. Corrosion rates and porosity changes were measured. Microstructural characterization was performed using X-ray diffractometry and scanning electron microscopy. Results show that porous alloys...

No-Wait & No-Idle Open Shop Minimum Makespan Scheduling with Bioperational Jobs
PublicationIn the open shop scheduling with bioperational jobs each job consists of two unit operations with a delay between the end of the first operation and the beginning of the second one. No-wait requirement enforces that the delay between operations is equal to 0. No-idle means that there is no idle time on any machine. We model this problem by the interval incidentor (1, 1)-coloring (IIR(1, 1)-coloring) of a graph with the minimum...

Free convection of water-Al2O3 nanofluid from horizontal porous coated tube
PublicationNanofluids are expected to enhance heat transfer in many thermal systems. Present efforts are concentrated on boiling heat transfer of nanofluids, although single phase convection is of key importance in various appliances such as car radiators or heating systems. This paper presents experimental results of heat transfer during free convection of water-Al3O3 nanofluid from horizontal tube covered with metallic porous coating. Contrary...

Green porous benzamide-like nanomembranes for hazardous cations detection, separation, and concentration adjustment
PublicationGreen biomaterials play a crucial role in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases as well as health-related problem-solving. Typically, biocompatibility, biodegradability, and mechanical strength are requirements centered on biomaterial engineering. However, in-hospital therapeutics require an elaborated synthesis of hybrid and complex nanomaterials capable of mimicking cellular behavior. Accumulation of hazardous cations like...

Open Innovation Competence for a Future-Proof Workforce: A Comparative Study from Four European Universities
PublicationDigital transformation is a key driving force of open innovation to capture and transfer knowledge inside and outside of a company’s bounds. New challenges in organizing multiple knowledge flows imply the need for increased competences related to this paradigm of future employees. In this article, we organize and aggregate the competencies required for open innovation collaboration and develop a competence profile that organizes...

Going all in or spreading your bet: a configurational perspective on open innovation interaction channels in production sectors
PublicationUsing different interaction channels within open innovation partnerships holds the potential to enhance the chance of success in production sectors. However, our comprehension of how open innovation partnerships are affected by varying combinations of interaction channels, and how this corelates with their level of open innovation output, remains limited. There are discrepancies in the current literature regarding the individual...

Global defensive secure structures
PublicationLet S ⊂ V (G) for a given simple non-empty graph G. We define for any nonempty subset X of S the predicate SECG,S(X) = true iff |NG[X]∩S| ≥ |NG[X]\S|. Let H be a non-empty family of graphs such that for each vertex v ∈ V (G) there is a subgraph H of G containing v and isomorphic to a member of H. We introduce the concept of H-alliance extending the concept of global defensive secure structures. By an H-alliance in a graph G we...

Normal-form preemption sequences for an open problem in scheduling theory
PublicationStructural properties of optimal preemptive schedules have been studied in a number of recent papers with a primary focus on two structural parameters: the minimum number of preemptions necessary, and a tight lower bound on shifts, i.e., the sizes of intervals bounded by the times created by preemptions, job starts, or completions. These two parameters have been investigated for a large class of preemptive scheduling problems,...

Synchronic digital stereophotography and photogrammetric analyses in monitoring the flow of liquids in open channels
PublicationThe authors present the results of their research into photogrammetric documents based on synchronic digital images. Examples presented in the paper indicate the value of synchronic stereophotography in registering phenomena connected with liquids. Combining synchronic stereophotography with photogrammetric methods has allowed the authors to develop an application useful for monitoring the flow of a liquid in an open channel.

Experimental and Numerical Study on Pounding of Structures in Series
PublicationPounding between structures in series during earthquakes may cause serious damage in the structural elements. The aim of this paper is to show the results of an experimental and numerical study that is focused on pounding between more than two structures which may be described as “structures in series”. In this study, the shaking table experiments, as well as the numerical analyses, were performed using three tower models including...

Open-Set Speaker Identification Using Closed-Set Pretrained Embeddings
PublicationThe paper proposes an approach for extending deep neural networks-based solutions to closed-set speaker identification toward the open-set problem. The idea is built on the characteristics of deep neural networks trained for the classification tasks, where there is a layer consisting of a set of deep features extracted from the analyzed inputs. By extracting this vector and performing anomaly detection against the set of known...

Macromodels for Efficient Analysis of Open-Region Problems Using the Finite Element Method
PublicationThis paper presents a local model-order reduction, called macromodeling, applied to speed-up the simulations of open-region problems, analyzed by means of finite element method. This technique is illustrated by a numerical example, which deals with a dielectric resonator antenna (DRA). The obtained results show that the proposed approach is reliable and can significantly increase the standard finite element method efficiency.

Using FreeFEM open software for modelling the vibrations of piezoelectric devices
PublicationModelling vibrations of piezoelectric transducers has been a topic discussed in the literature for many decades. The first models - so-called one-dimensional - describe the vibrations only near operating frequency and near its harmonics. Attempts to introduce two-dimensional models were related to the possibility of one transducer working at several frequencies, including both thickness vibrations and those resulting from the transducer...

Pre-oxidation of porous ferritic Fe22Cr alloys for lifespan extension at high-temperature
PublicationPre-oxidation of porous ferritic Fe22Cr alloys was extensively studied in this paper. Weight gain measurements and SEM analysis revealed that pre-oxidation performed at 900◦C for 40 min increased the lifespan of the alloy. A Cr evaporation study did not disclose any significant influence of the pre-oxidation process on the Cr content in the alloy. For a more detailed assessment, TEM imaging and X-ray tomography measurements of...

Support for argument structures review and assessment
PublicationArgument structures are commonly used to develop and present cases for safety, security and for other properties of systems. Such structures tend to grow excessively, which causes problems with their review and assessment. Two issues are of particular interest: (1) systematic and explicit assessment of the compelling power of an argument, and (2) communication of the result of such an assessment to relevant recipients. The paper...

Ammonia amendment promotes high rate lactate production and recovery from semi-continuous food waste fermentation
PublicationIn this study, a reliable approach using ammonia nitrogen was proposed to increase lactate production during semi-continuous food waste (FW) fermentation under mesophilic conditions. Both free ammonia nitrogen (FAN) and ammonium ion (NH4+-N) were present in mesophilic reactors, with a wide FAN/NH4+-N ratio variation due to the intermittent pH control. The investigation of responsible mechanisms revealed that the increased production...
