Wild oscillations in a nonlinear neuron model with resets: (II) Mixed-mode oscillations
PublicationThis work continues the analysis of complex dynamics in a class of bidimensional nonlinear hybrid dynamical systems with resets modeling neuronal voltage dynamics with adaptation and spike emission. We show that these models can generically display a form of mixed-mode oscillations (MMOs), which are trajectories featuring an alternation of small oscillations with spikes or bursts (multiple consecutive spikes). The mechanism by...

Firing map of an almost periodic input function
PublicationIn mathematical biology and the theory of electric networks the firing map of an integrate-and-fire system is a notion of importance. In order to prove useful properties of this map authors of previous papers assumed that the stimulus function f of the system ẋ = f(t,x) is continuous and usually periodic in the time variable. In this work we show that the required properties of the firing map for the simplified model ẋ = f(t) still...

Mining Knowledge of Respiratory Rate Quantification and Abnormal Pattern Prediction
PublicationThe described application of granular computing is motivated because cardiovascular disease (CVD) remains a major killer globally. There is increasing evidence that abnormal respiratory patterns might contribute to the development and progression of CVD. Consequently, a method that would support a physician in respiratory pattern evaluation should be developed. Group decision-making, tri-way reasoning, and rough set–based analysis...

Estimation of a smoothness parameter by spline wavelets
PublicationWe consider the smoothness parameter s*(f) of a function f∈L2(R) in terms of Besov spaces. The existing results on estimation of smoothness [K. Dziedziul, M. Kucharska and B. Wolnik, J. Nonparametric Statist. 23 (2011)] employ the Haar basis and are limited to the case 0

Medley filters - simple tools for efficient signal smoothing
PublicationMedley filters are defined as convex combinations of elementary smoothing filters (averaging, median) with different smoothing bandwidths. It is shown that when adaptive weights of such a mixture are evaluated using the recently proposed Bayesian rules, one obtains a tool which often outperforms the state-of-the-art wavelet-based smoothing algorithms. Additionally, unlike wavelet-based procedures, medley filters can easily cope...

Multiresolution analysis and adaptive estimation on a sphere using stereographic wavelets
PublicationWe construct an adaptive estimator of a density function on d dimensional unit sphere Sd (d ≥ 2), using a new type of spherical frames. The frames, or as we call them, stereografic wavelets are obtained by transforming a wavelet system, namely Daubechies, using some stereographic operators. We prove that our estimator achieves an optimal rate of convergence on some Besov type class of functions by adapting to unknown smoothness....

POSSIBILITY OF ASSESSMENT OF OPERATION OF SLIDING BEARINGS IN PISTON-CRANK MECHANISMS OF DIESEL ENGINES WITH REGARD TO LOAD AND TIME OF CORRECT WORK OF THE BEARINGS BY APPLYING ACOUSTIC EMISSION AS A DIAGNOSTIC SIGNAL

Properties of load and wear, particularly fatigue and abrasive, are characterized in general. Acoustic emission as a diagnostic signal was proved to be useful for detection of the wear of sliding and barrier layers. Results of measurements of acoustic emission...

Analysis of magnetic field distribution inside ferromagnetic thin shells during degaussing process
PublicationAnalysis of the demagnetization of a large ferromagnetic object like a ship, was conducted. The approximate mathematical model in the form of a long cylindrical shell of constant magnetic permeability was applied. The discrete degaussing winding was assumed and the current density and magnetic flux density distribution in the ferromagnetic shell wall were determined. Based on the frequential and temporal analysis the recommended...

Fourier transforms on Cantor sets: A study in non-Diophantine arithmetic and calculus
PublicationFractals equipped with intrinsic arithmetic lead to a natural definition of differentiation, integration, and complex structure. Applying the formalism to the problem of a Fourier transform on fractals we show that the resulting transform has all the required basic properties. As an example we discuss a sawtooth signal on the ternary middle-third Cantor set. The formalism works also for fractals that are not self-similar.

Open Research DataAs the properties of polyols have a huge impact on the properties of manufactured polyurethanes, this study aims to determine the influence of polyethylene glycols with different molecular masses on the course of the biomass liquefaction process and bio-polyol properties. The obtained polyols were characterized by rheological studies. To confirm the...

On dynamics of origami-inspired rod
PublicationWe discuss the dynamics of a relatively simple origami-inspired structure considering discrete and continuum models. The latter was derived as a certain limit of the discrete model. Here we analyze small in-plane deformations and related equations of infinitesimal motions. For both models, dispersion relations were derived and compared. The comparison of the dispersion relations showed that the continuum model can capture the behavior...

Testing a Variety of Features for Music Mood Recognition. Testowanie zestawu parametrów w celu rozpoznawania nastroju w muzyce
PublicationMusic collections are organized in a very different way depending on a target, number of songs or a distribution method, etc. One of the high-level feature, which can be useful and intuitive for listeners, is “mood”. Even if it seems to be the easiest way to describe music for people who are non-experts, it is very difficult to find the exact correlation between physical features and perceived impressions. The paper presents experiments...

Two examples of Quantum Dynamical Semigroups
PublicationThe Hamiltonians of the considered bi-partite systems are of the form $$ H_{S,R} = H_S /times 1_R + Q_{S} /times M_R + 1_S /times H_R $$ Subindex $S$ corresponds to the observed system and $R$ to the reservoir (the enviroment of $S$). Two classes of systems are distinguished: the discrete-continuous...

Hybrid Technique for the EM Scattering Analysis with the Use of Ring Domain Decomposition
PublicationA hybrid technique combining finite-element and mode-matching methods for the analysis of scattering problems in open space is presented here. The main idea is based on impedance matrix descriptions of the boundary surrounding the discrete computational domain and combine it with external field described analytically. The discrete analysis, which is the most time- and memory-consuming, is limited here only to the close proximity...

Sport-related concussion alters cerebral hemodynamic activity during controlled respiration
PublicationThis study investigated cerebral hemodynamic activity following sport-related concussion. Prefrontal cortex oxygenation was assessed by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during a controlled breathing protocol. Wavelet transformation of the NIRS signals showed significant decreases in HbO2 and HbD amplitude at the respiratory frequency interval (0.10–0.6 HZ) from preseason baseline to acute concussion. These results suggest a decreased...

On the preestimation technique and its application to identification of nonstationary systems
PublicationThe problem of noncausal identification of a nonstationary stochastic FIR (finite impulse response) sys- tem is reformulated, and solved, as a problem of smoothing of preestimated parameter trajectories. Three approaches to preestimation are critically analyzed and compared. It is shown that optimization of the smoothing operation can be performed adaptively using the parallel estimation technique. The new approach is computationally...

The smoothness test for a density function
PublicationThe problem of testing hypothesis that a density function has no more than μ derivatives versus it has more than μ derivatives is considered. For a solution, the L2 norms of wavelet orthogonal projections on some orthogonal ‘‘differences’’ of spaces from a multiresolution analysis is used. For the construction of the smoothness test an asymptotic distribution of a smoothness estimator is used. To analyze that asymptotic distribution,...
