CAPABILITY OF IDENTIFYING AND PREDICTING THE TECHNICAL CONDITION OF PLATE HEAT EXCHANGERS IN OPERATION
PublicationThe paper presents a test stand for plate heat exchangers, allowing to identify the technical condition and to predict durability of the heat exchangers used aboard the sea-going ships: ”Oceanograf”, ”Władysław Orkan”and a passenger-car ferry, under the condition that they are of the same type and manufactured by the same company. In the first part three different installations with plate heat exchangers in the engine rooms...

Topological invariants for equivariant flows: Conley index and degree
PublicationAbout forty years have passed since Charles Conley defined the homotopy index. Thereby, he generalized the ideas that go back to the calculus of variations work of Marston Morse. Within this long time the Conley index has proved to be a valuable tool in nonlinear analysis and dynamical systems. A significant development of applied methods has been observed. Later, the index theory has evolved to cover such areas as discrete dynamical...

Edible dragonflies and damselflies (order Odonata) as human food – A comprehensive review
PublicationThe rapid growth of the human population leads to a big concern about the food y and demand worldwide. However, due to the reduction in global arable land area, humans need to find alternative food sources to fulfil their needs. Consequently, edible insects have been identified as a promising solution to ameliorate food security and increase global nutrition. Among more than 2,100 identified edible insect species, dragonflies and...

Perceptual and Motor Effects of Muscle Co-activation in a Force Production Task
PublicationWe tested several predictions of the theory of motor control with spatial referent coordinates related to effects of muscle coactivation on force production and perception. In particular, we predicted that subjects would produce unintentional force increase by finger flexors and be unaware of this force increase. Healthy subjects performed steady force production task in isometric conditions with visual feedback on the force level....

Novel DNA-binding protein from Nanoarchaeum equitans Kin4-M binds all kinds of nucleic acids
PublicationNanoarchaeum equitans is the only known representative of Archaea phylum Nanoarchaeota and stands out as one of the tiniest known living organism. What is more it has smallest genome, which is only 490.885 base pairs long. It is also one of the most compact genomes. According to predictions about 95% of the DNA encodes proteins or stable RNA. Nanoarchaeum equitans lacks genes for most vital metabolic pathways including lipid, cofactor,...

Knowledge management in SMEs – selected issues.
PublicationThe success of a small or medium-size enterprise might be dependent on the way in which this company manages its knowledge. With limited access to other resources like land, capital or labor force, the access to knowledge and its effective application might become a source of competitive advantage for an SME. It is confirmed that organizations, which successfully implement the concept of knowledge management might achieve better...

Estimation of the size of informal employment based on administrative records with non‐ignorable selection mechanism
PublicationIn this study, we used company level administrative data from the National Labour Inspectorate and The Polish Social Insurance Institution in order to estimate the prevalence of informal employment in Poland in 2016. Since the selection mechanism is non‐ignorable, we employed a generalization of Heckman’s sample selection model assuming non‐Gaussian correlation of errors and clustering by incorporation of random effects. We found...

Changes in gene methylation patterns in neonatal murine hearts: Implications for the regenerative potential
PublicationBackground The neonatal murine heart is able to regenerate after severe injury; this capacity however, quickly diminishes and it is lost within the first week of life. DNA methylation is an epigenetic mechanism which plays a crucial role in development and gene expression regulation. Under investigation here are the changes in DNA methylation and gene expression patterns which accompany the loss of regenerative potential. Results The...

Traffic-induced vibrations. The impact on buildings and people
PublicationTraffic-induced vibrations have recently been of major concern to engineers as one of the aspects of so called physical environmental pollution. The interest is related to the observations of serious negative effects of such kind of vibrations on buildings and their inhabitants. Traffic-induced vibrations may cause plaster cracks, structural damage and even failure and collapse of the structure. They may also be the reason of serious...

Diffusion equations with spatially dependent coefficients and fractal Cauer-type networks

It is proved that for a finite differences discretization...
