Tanatoarchitektura [=] Thanatoarchitecture
PublikacjaApart from medicine and philosophy, deliberations about thanatology - the science of dying and death - are nowadays a subject of interest in psychol-ogy, pedagogy, anthropology, sociology or theology. It seems that there is also space for such deliberations in the field of architecture. This may con-cern the conditions and dignity of death (i.e. in a hospice) but also matters related to the design of the burial and memorial sites....

Non-Satellite Broadband Maritime Communications for e-Navigation Services
PublikacjaThe development of broadband network access technologies available to users on land has triggered a rapid expansion of a diverse range of services provided by terrestrial networks. However, due to limitations of digital communication technologies in the off-shore area, the maritime ICT systems evolution so far has not followed that trend. Despite the e-navigation initiative defining the set of Maritime Services, the progress in...

Social responsibility of universities - the example of AGH University of Science and Technology
PublikacjaThe key question here is how to achieve a symbiotic relationship between the university and its environment. The evolution of the Polish higher education system since 1990 shows how the mutual relations between the university and its surroundings may change over time. The conclusions published in the OECD report on higher education are juxtaposed with the description of the status quo of the Polish universities and compared with...

Ultrasound monitoring for evaluation of damage in reinforced concrete
PublikacjaThe paper deals with automated monitoring of damage evolution in concrete elements subjected to three-point bending tests. The monitoring is based on the nonlinear interactions of traveling ultrasonic waves with micro-crack zones inside the concrete specimens and surface-breaking cracks. The developed procedure assumes semi-continuous ultrasonic testing during the element full loading cycle and generation of the power spectral...

Quantum-state transfer in spin chains via isolated resonance of terminal spins
PublikacjaWe propose a quantum-state transfer protocol in a spin chain that requires only the control of the spins at the ends of the quantum wire. The protocol is to a large extent insensitive to inhomogeneity caused by local magnetic fields and perturbation of exchange couplings. Moreover, apart from the free evolution regime, it allows one to induce an adiabatic spin transfer, which provides the possibility of performing the transfer...

Degradation of metal implants covered with silver
PublikacjaSilver was known for its antibacterial properties as long ago as in antiquity. The silver ions have ability to join the bacteria surface. Low density of silver ions Ag+ influence the protons through the bacteria surface, which results in total destruction of the cell. Antibacterial activity of silver remains in proportion with the density of silver ions Ag+ in the environment.

Hysteresis curves and loops for harmonic and impulse perturbations in some non-equilibrium gases
PublikacjaEvolution of sound in a relaxing gas whose properties vary in the course of wave propagation, is studied. A relaxing medium may reveal normal acoustic properties or be acoustically active. In the first case, losses in acoustic energy lead to an increase in internal energy of a gas similarly as it happens in Newtonian fluids. In the second case, acoustic energy increases in the course of sound propagation, and the internal energy...

CFCGR formulae, including the long-crack length effect (in region I only), the loading frequency effect (in region II only), and the saltwater temperature effect, have been proposed. It has been assumed that CFCGR is proportional...

On the influence of a surface roughness on propagation of anti-plane short-length localized waves in a medium with surface coating

We derive a boundary-value problem for anti-plane motions with curvilinear boundary and surface stresses. Using the asymptotic technique developed earlier, we obtain the form of a localized wave and analyze its amplitude evolution. As the main result we present...
