Biological hazards in low noise, poroelastic road surfaces
PublikacjaDrainage pavements as well as poroelastic pavements ("PERS") are a very efficient way to decrease traffic noise by reducing tire/road noise at the source as well as noise propagation over the road surface. Many noise generating mechanisms at the tire/road interface are very much reduced by road porosity (pipe resonance, "air pumping", Helmholtz resonance and the horn effect). A well-designed porous or poroelastic road surface may...

Active feedback noise control in the presence of impulsive disturbances
PublikacjaThe problem of active feedback control of a narrowband acoustic noise in the presence of impulsive disturbances is considered. It is shown that, when integrated with appropriately designed outlier detector, the proposed earlier feedback control algorithm called SONIC is capable of isolating and rejecting noise pulses. According to our tests this guarantees stable and reliable operation of the closed-loop noise cancelling...

Active Suppression of Nonstationary Narrowband Acoustic Disturbances
PublikacjaIn this chapter, a new approach to active narrowband noise control is presented. Narrowband acoustic noise may be generated, among others, by rotating parts of electro-mechanical devices, such as motors, turbines, compressors, or fans. Active noise control involves the generation of “antinoise”, i.e., the generation of a sound that has the same amplitude, but the opposite phase, as the unwanted noise, which causes them to interfere...

Easy recipes for cooperative smoothing
PublikacjaIn this paper we suggest how several competing signal smoothers, differing in design parameters, or even in design principles, can be combined together to yield a better and more reliable smoothing algorithm. The proposed heuristic, but statistically well motivated, fusion mechanism allows one to combine practically all kinds of smoothers, from simple local averaging or order statistic filters, to parametric smoothers designed...

COMPARISON OF NOISE EMISSION OF HCT AND CLASSIC VEHICLE COMBINATIONS FOR TIMBER TRANSPORTATION IN SWEDEN
PublikacjaBy means of a special simulation tool, the noise emission of a high-capacity heavy vehicle (11 axles) was compared to that of a classic heavy vehicle (a truck-dolly-semitrailer with 8 axles). The two cases are designated “Extended vehicle” versus “Classic vehicle” in this study, having total lengths of 34 and 25 m, respectively. The Classic vehicle represents the most common articulated heavy vehicle configuration for transport...

IMPULSE NOISE ASSOCIATED WITH FIRING HANDHELD MILITARY WEAPONS
PublikacjaSports, hunting and military shooting grounds are well known sources of noise that can be disruptive both for people present at those facilities, as well as for people and animals that live nearby. What is more, shooters are also subjected to very painful and dangerous impulse noise. The paper discusses the issues related to the noise immission during firing of small firearms of military type that are typical for Poland. The experiments...

Final report on noise and rolling resistance
PublikacjaWork Package 6 deals with environmental impacts of PERS use, including noise and rolling resistance. This report covers preliminary noise tests performed in the laboratory and at the road test sites. The obtained results indicate that PERS material reduce noise considerably - up to 12 dB in comparison to SMA16 reference surface. Noise reduction properties are especially visible in the case of factory produced PERS slabs supplied...

TIRE/ROAD NOISE AND TIRE ROLLING RESISTANCE ON PROTOTYPE PERS SURFACE
PublikacjaPoroelastic road surfaces are characterized by low noise of tires running on them.Road pavements of this type are promising solution to problems related to traffic noise in cities and on rural roads. Some technical problems still have to be solved, in particular regarding durability and skid resistance on wet surface. Ongoing and planned works are to contribute to create a quiet, durable and safe road surface, which will become...

EVALUATION OF SOUND QUALITY FEATURES ON ENVIRONMENTAL NOISE EFFECTS – A CASE STUDY APPLIED TO ROAD TRAFFIC NOISE
PublikacjaThe paper shows a study on the relationship between noise measures and sound quality (SQ) features that are related to annoyance caused by the traffic noise. First, a methodology to perform analyses related to the traffic noise annoyance is described including references to parameters of the assessment of road noise sources. Next, the measurement setup, location and results are presented along with the derived sound quality features....

UNDERWATER NOISE GENERATED BY A SMALL SHIP IN THE SHALLOW SEA
PublikacjaStudy of the sea noise has been a subject of interest for years. The first work of this scope were published at the turn of the twentieth century by Knudsen (KNUDSEN et al., 1948) and G. Wenz (WENZ, 1962). Disturbances called "shipping noise" are one of the important components of the sea noise. In this work the results of an experimental research of underwater noise produced by a small ship of a classic propulsion are...

Problems of Railway Noise-A Case Study
PublikacjaUnder Directive 2002/49/EC relating to the assessment and management of environmental noise, all European countries are obliged to model their environmental noise levels in heavily populated areas. Some countries have their own national method, to predict noise but most have not created one yet. The recommendation for countries that do not have their own model is to use an interim method. The Dutch SRM II scheme is suggested for...

Robust algorithm for active feedback control of narrowband noise
PublikacjaThe problem of active control of narrowband acoustic noise is considered. It is shown that the proposed earlier feedback control algorithm called SONIC (self-optimizing narrowband interference canceller), based on minimization of the L2-norm performance measure, can be re-derived using the L1 approach. The resulting robust SONIC algorithm is more robust to heavy-tailed measurement noise, such as the αlpha-stable noise, than the...

A review of design approaches for the implementation of low-frequency noise measurement systems
PublikacjaElectronic noise has its roots in the fundamental physical interactions between matter and charged particles, carrying information about the phenomena that occur at the microscopic level. Therefore, Low-Frequency Noise Measurements (LFNM) are a well-established technique for the characterization of electron devices and materials and, compared to other techniques, they offer the advantage of being non-destructive and of providing...

INFLUENCE OF MEASURING CONDITIONS ON TYRE/ROAD NOISE
PublikacjaA decisive factor for the development of tyres and road surfaces is the ability to conduct representative and reproducible measurements of selected characteristics related to the interaction of tyres and road surfaces. In terms of tyre/road noise measurements in Europe two methods described in ISO/FDIS 11819-2 and ECE Regulation No.117 are used. The latter is compulsory for assigning the tyre noise labels. The methodologies differ...

Poroelastic Low Noise Road Surfaces
PublikacjaNoise is one of the most important problems related to road traffic. During the last decades, noise emitted by engine and powertrain of vehicles was greatly reduced and tyres became a clearly dominant noise source. The paper describes the concept of low noise poroelastic road surfaces that are composed with mineral and rubber aggregate bound by polyurethane resin. Those surfaces have a porous structure and are much more flexible...
