IMPACT OF DIRECT CURRENT ON NITRIFYING BIOMASS
PublicationEffects of short term exposure of nitrifying biomass to direct current were studied. DC was applied to mixed liquor from municipal BNR plant using graphite electrodes in no substrate limiting conditions. Both, ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and nitrite oxidizing bacteria (NOB) populations were affected by the current, however in opposite ways. The AOB population activity was inhibited by applied voltage. Activity decrease was...

Switched-capacitor DC-DC converters in arbitrary switching mode - topologically derived resistive models based on incremental graph approach.
PublicationIn the preceding paper we reviewed some of modeling approaches aimed at systematic formulation and solution of switched capacitor DC-DC converters. In our review, special attention was paid to computationally efficient and mathematically elegant methods. In so doing we had tried to demonstrate the virtues of unified Incremental Graph (IG) approach. Incremental Graph is, in concept, a tool originally created for analysis and synthesis...

Low-frequency tripping characteristics of residual current devices
PublicationFast development of various types of converters makes their utilization in industry and in domestic installations very common. Due to converters, an earth fault current waveform in modern circuits can be distorted or its frequency can be different than 50/60 Hz. Frequency of earth fault (residual) current influences tripping of residual current devices which are widely used in low voltage systems. This paper presents the behaviour...

Enhancing Performance of Switched Parasitic Antenna for Localization in Wireless Sensor Networks
PublicationThis paper presents an Electronically Steerable Parasitic Array Radiator (ESPAR) antenna with enhanced performance of estimating the incoming signal direction. Designed antenna is dedicated for 2.4 GHz ISM applications with emphasis on Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN). The limitations of the existing design approach are illustrated, as well as perspectives and challenges of the proposed solution in relation to the localization in...

Efficient Multi-Fidelity Design Optimization of Microwave Filters Using Adjoint Sensitivity
PublicationA simple and robust algorithm for computationally efficient design optimiza-tion of microwave filters is presented. Our approach exploits a trust-region (TR)-based algorithm that utilizes linear approximation of the filter response obtained using adjoint sensitivity. The algorithm is sequentially executed on a family of electromagnetic (EM)-simulated models of different fidelities, starting from a coarse-discretization one, and...

Special discrete-time filters and applications

Automated CAD of coupled resonator filters
PublicationGradientowa metoda optymalizacji wraz z nową definicją funkcji celu opartą na rozkładzie biegunów oraz zer funkcji transmitancji obwodu, została zastosowana do pełnofalowej syntezy filtrów falowodowych pasmowo-przepustowych. Ekstrakcja biegunów wykonywana jest w oparciu metodę Cauchyłego. Przestawiona technika pozwana na znalezienie wymiarów geometrycznych struktur filtrujących o zadanej topologii bez konieczności wcześniejszej...

Fast synthesis of coupled-resonator filters.

The wastewater flow through trickling filters.
PublicationFiltry zraszane projektowane są głównie w oparciu o wytyczne techniczne. W pracy zaproponowano metodę o charakterze strukturalnym. Pokazano sposób określania miarodajnego czasu przebywania cieczy w układzie i powiązania go z kinetyczną charakterystyką procesu oczyszczania ścieków.

Residual current devices in installations with PV energy sources
PublicationThe paper presents the principles of residual current devices (RCDs) application in photovoltaic (PV) installations. Provisions of standards in this regard are commented on, in particular, attention is drawn to the lack of obligation to use of RCDs in PV installations. The issue of the shape of the earth fault current and the level of leakage currents in such installations are discussed. These factors influence the selection of...

Self-optimizing generalized adaptive notch filters - comparison of three optimization strategies
PublicationThe paper provides comparison of three different approaches to on-line tuning of generalized adaptive notch filters (GANFs) the algorithms used for identification/tracking of quasi-periodically varying dynamic systems. Tuning is needed to adjust adaptation gains, which control tracking performance of ANF algorithms, to the unknown and/or time time-varying rate of system nonstationarity. Two out ofthree compared approaches are classical...

Enhanced Toxicity of Bisphenols Together with UV Filters in Water: Identification of Synergy and Antagonism in Three-Component Mixtures
PublicationContaminants of emerging concern (CEC) localize in the biome in variable combinations of complex mixtures that are often environmentally persistent, bioaccumulate and biomagnify, prompting a need for extensive monitoring. Many cosmetics include UV filters that are listed as CECs, such as benzophenone derivatives (oxybenzone, OXYB), cinnamates (2-ethylhexyl 4-methoxycinnamate, EMC) and camphor derivatives (4-methylbenzylidene-camphor,...

Protection of bridges against stray current corrosion
PublicationA case study of Siennicki Bridge stray current corrosion hazard is presented. A corrosion risk was caused by incorrectly designed tram line traction which goes over the bridge. No dielectric insulation between running rails and bridge steel construction was used. A variety of protection methods against stray currents are described. Characteristics of the endangered bridge were described. Impressed current cathodic protection system...

The application of moving bed biofilm reactor to denitrification process after trickling filters
PublicationThe paper presents research of a prototype moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR). The device was used for the post-denitrification process and was installed at the end of a technological system consisting of a septic tank and two trickling filters. The concentrations of suspended biomass and biomass attached on the EvU Perl moving bed surface were determined. The impact of the external organic carbon concentration on the denitrification...
