Shape and force control of cable structures with minimal actuators and actuation
PublicationShape adjustment and stress control can be considered as one of the effective parameters in prestressed cable structures since such structures are widely constructed nowadays due to their characteristics. The assembly errors and applied loads hugely affect the cables’ nodal positions and stress due to their delicacy. The former could disturb the shape, which affects the appearance and the function of the structure. In contrast,...

The structures of this kind have already been built. Thus,...

PublicationPurpose This paper aims to assess control parameter setup and its effect on computational cost and performance of deterministic procedures for multi-objective design optimization of expensive simulation models of antenna structures. Design/methodology/approach A deterministic algorithm for cost-efficient multi-objective optimization of antenna structures has been assessed. The algorithm constructs a patch connecting extreme Pareto-optimal...

Problems of Flaking in Strengthening Shaft Burnishing
PublicationThe article presents the results of testing the surface condition of shafts manufactured by a strengthening rolling burnishing process. The shafts with a hardness about 220 HB were burnished with a roller with different force. Researches were carried out with particular attention to the structure of the outflowing material in the tool zone during burnishing process. The article presents the results of the examinations of burnished...

Method of selective fading as a educational tool to study the behaviour of prestressed concrete elements under excess loading
PublicationPrestressed structures are a key to realization of the boldest architectural ideas, characteristic feature of prestressed structure is better use of concrete material properties by insertion of internal forces. Learning about pre-stressed reinforced concrete structures is an integral part of Graduate Studies Program in construction engineering. Know-how of geometry change patterns in prestressed concrete elements under certain...

Design of modified PID controllers for 3D crane control
PublicationFrom the control viewpoint, 3D crane is a dynamic, nonlinear and multidimensional electromechanical system. In this paper, five control systems using a set-point weighted PID controllers (modified controllers) are designed. These structures and properties are presented. Optimization process of controllers settings based on integral performance indices is made. Simulation tests of control systems are presented. Comparison of integral...

Two tests for adhesive bonding long term characterization: principles and applications
PublicationThis article describes recent refinement of the traditional wedge test technique used to characterize durability of the adhesive joints. We propose two types of measuring protocols to monitor precisely and continuously the propagation of an "effective" crack during long term mode I fracture mechanic test. First method is directly derived from the traditional wedge test technique and consist in monitoring the surface strain of adherent...

Effectiveness of a mathematical model in simulating nonlinear mechanical behaviour of a seismic isolation system made of polymeric bearings
PublicationThe present study was focused on determining the effectives of a nonlinear mathematical model in simulating complex mechanical behaviour of a seismic isolation system made of Polymeric Bearings. The proposed mathematical model defines the lateral force as a nonlinear function of the shear displacement and the deformation velocity. The effectiveness of the proposed mathematical model was verified by comparing the seismic response...

Design of optimal state feedback controller with observer for multidimensional electrical system
PublicationFrom the control point of view, two-input-two-output RC electrical system is a linear and multidimensional system. In this paper, integral control and closed-loop observer are verified whether they can be used and designed. To verify this, Kalman tests are made. These structures are presented and discussed. Integral Control is tested with some base disturbances impact and checked whether it can handle them. The estimated values...

On the generalized model of shell structures with functional cross-sections
PublicationIn the present study, a single general formulation has been presented for the analysis of various shell-shaped structures. The proposed model is comprehensive and a variety of theories can be used based on it. The cross-section of the shell structure can be arbitrarily analyzed with the presented equations. In other words, various types of shell structures, including cylindrical, conical, spherical, elliptical, hyperbolic, parabolic,...

Nondestructive Testing of the Miter Gates Using Various Measurement Methods
PublicationWhen any problems related to civil engineering structures appear, identifying the issue through the usage of only one measuring method is difficult. Therefore, comprehensive tests are required to identify the main source. The strains and displacement measurements, as well as modal identification, are widely used in the nondestructive testing of structures. However, measurements are usually carried out at several points and confirm...

Arch bridges under test loadings
PublicationThis paper illustrates experience in arch bridges test loadings of the research team of Department of Structural Mechanics and Bridge Structures from the Gdansk University of Technology. The presented calculations results constist the analysis of spatial construction schemes made using the finite elements method (FEM) and its comparison to the field studies. Arch bridges with the longest spans, visualisation of the computational...

Computational Fluid Dynamic study on the wind characteristics of a multifunctional building system model in developed coastal cities
PublicationThis paper presents an approach for providing innovative technology by applying fluid mechanics to the field of architectural design. The aim is to make a building’s shape profitable and strengthen environmental protection by using the wind force to create an integrated wind absorption definition for a multifunctional building system model. Furthermore, taking control of the wind flow over an object can have an impact on not only...

Small rov to detection and identification of dangerous underwater objects
PublicationA small unmanned underwater vehicle (UUV) to inspection of an undersea space is presented in the paper. Its behavior is controlled by a trained pilot. Correct detection and identification of targets depends on vehicle'sprecise displacement along a predefined route. Nowadays, the UUVs are equipped with an automatic control system to execute some basic maneuvers without constant human interventions. Hence, in the paper, an autopilot...
