Average Redundancy of the Shannon Code for Markov Sources
PublicationIt is known that for memoryless sources, the average and maximal redundancy of fixed–to–variable length codes, such as the Shannon and Huffman codes, exhibit two modes of behavior for long blocks. It either converges to a limit or it has an oscillatory pattern, depending on the irrationality or rationality, respectively, of certain parameters that depend on the source. In this paper, we extend these findings, concerning the Shannon...

It is argued that the counterface material and lubricating film play an important role in the damage process and the extent of damage inflicted in the PMMA plate.

Induced Sheath Voltages In 110 Kv Power Cables – Case Study
PublicationThe paper considers shock hazard due to induced sheath voltages in 110 kV power cables. Various configurations of the metallic sheaths bonding and earthing (single-point bonding, both-ends bonding, cross-bonding) are analysed. Taking into account shock hazard and ability of the system to power transfer an optimal configuration is proposed.

Kinedynamics of Spherical Wavefields in Fluid and Dielectric Continua
PublicationDistubances induced by physical sources in fluids or dielectrics maintain their primary character while propagating throughout either of these bi-dynamic continua. The paper defines and illustrates four sets of bi-fields based on four specific fundamental kinedynamic solutions to inhomogeneous wave equations related to quasi-point acoustic and electromagnetic sources.

DBpedia As a Formal Knowledge Base – An Evaluation
PublicationDBpedia is widely used by researchers as a mean of accessing Wikipedia in a standardized way. In this paper it is characterized from the point of view of questions answering system. Simple implementation of such system is also presented. The paper also characterizes alternatives to DBpedia in form of OpenCyc and YAGO knowledge bases. A comparison between DBpedia and those knowledge bases is presented.

Modern trends in internet marketing - Researching the virality of brands on social media channels
PublicationThis paper presents a new approach for the research and identification of users generated content on social media channels. For the online branding research is proposed the use of twi software - SentiOne and NodeXL. The combination of those tools elicit a different point of view of how to manage in an effective way the overflow of the content publish by single individuals in social media networks.

Positive solutions to advanced fractional differential equations with nonlocal boundary conditions
PublicationWe study the existence of positive solutions for a class of higher order fractional differential equations with advanced arguments and boundary value problems involving Stieltjes integral conditions. The fixed point theorem due to Avery-Peterson is used to obtain sufficient conditions for the existence of multiple positive solutions. Certain of our results improve on recent work in the literature.

Possibilities of applying standard tools of promotion in place marketing
PublicationThe purpose of this article is to present the tools of promotion that can be used by local government units in the developing and implementing of marketing strategies. The article evaluates a set of four basic tools of promotion comprising advertising, public relations and publicity, sales promotion and personal selling. This group was supplemented by direct marketing, presented from the point of view of communication via the Internet.

Attractors of dissipative homeomorphisms of the infinite surface homeomorphic to a punctured sphere
PublicationA class of dissipative orientation preserving homeomorphisms of the infinite annulus, pairs of pants, or generally any infinite surface homeomorphic to a punctured sphere isconsidered. We prove that in some isotopy classes the local behavior of such homeomor-phisms at a fixed point, namely the existence of so-called inverse saddle, impacts thetopology of the attractor — it cannot be arcwise connected

Ab initio and density functional theory calculations of proton affinities for volatile organic compounds
PublicationThe Hatree-Fock method with 6-311G** split-valence molecular orbitals basis sets and the density function theory-B3LYP have been applied to geometrical optimizations and calculations of total electronic, zero point vibrational energies and proton affinities at 298 K for volatile organic compounds. Calculated values of proton affinities are compared with experimental data.

BJS-03 DO WE NEED FIXATION OF THE MESH IN LAPAROENDOSCOPIC TECHNIQUES FOR M3 INGUINAL DEFECTS? AN EXPERIMENTAL STUDY
PublicationThe authors conducted a research experiment to verify the hypothesis that it is possible to preserve the mesh in the operating field in large direct hernias (M3) without the need to use fixing materials. The results showed that mesh fixation is not the only alternative to preventing recurrence in complex defects and that the type of implant seems to be a key factor from the point of view of mechanics and biophysics.

Determinants of judges’ career choices and productivity: a Polish case study
PublicationThe goal of this paper is to identify factors which affect judges’ productivity and career choice motives with the view of increasing judicial efficiency. Specifically, the investigation focuses on such aspects as judges’ remuneration, promotion, threat of judgment revocation, service/mission, periodic assessment, the threat of a complaint about protracted proceedings or of disciplinary proceedings, the threat of destabilization...

Evaluation of time-efficiency of disjoint paths calculation schemes
PublicationThe concept of alternate paths has been shown in the literature to provide fast response of a network to failures of its elements (nodes/links) affecting flows along the primary communication paths. Various approaches have been proposed to reduce the time necessary to redirect the respective flows onto the alternate paths. In this paper, we focus on another important objective, that so far has not received much attention, i.e.,...

Detection of Anomalies in the Operation of a Road Lighting System Based on Data from Smart Electricity Meters
PublicationSmart meters in road lighting systems create new opportunities for automatic diagnostics of undesirable phenomena such as lamp failures, schedule deviations, or energy theft from the power grid. Such a solution fits into the smart cities concept, where an adaptive lighting system creates new challenges with respect to the monitoring function. This article presents research results indicating the practical feasibility of real‐time...

Experimental Verification of the CFD Model of the Squeeze Film Lifting Effect
PublicationAbstract: The presented study shows the results of the research into the squeeze film levitation phenomena. The system introduced in the investigation is composed of a vibrating surface, air squeeze film, and the surface of the body freely suspended over the film. The use of the CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) model used in the system allows us to determine the steady state, periodic behavior of the air film (described by Navier–Stokes,...

Determination of aminoglycoside antibiotics: current status and future trends
PublicationThe use of aminoglycoside antibiotics is prevalent in medicine and agriculture. Their overuse increases their mobility in the environment, resulting in a need for reliable methods for their determination in a variety of matrices. However, the properties of aminoglycosides, in particular their high polarity, make the development of such methods a non-trivial task, inciting researchers to tackle this complex issue from different...

Comparison of heat transfer characteristics in surface cooling with boiling microjets of water, ethanol and HFE7100
PublicationThe basis of microjet technology is to produce jets which impinge the surface at the stagnation point with a very high kinetic energy. Main objective of this paper was to investigate the physical phenomena occurring on solid surfaces upon impingement of the single microjet in case of three fluids, namely water, ethanol and HFE7100. Intense heat transfer in the impact zone of microjet has been examined and described with precise...

Application of Fracture Mechanics for Energetic Effects Predictions While Wood Sawing
PublicationIn the classical approach, energetic effects (cutting forces and cutting power) of wood sawing process are generally calculated on the basis of the specific cutting resistance, which is in the case of wood cutting the function of more or less important factors. On the other hand, cutting forces (or power - more interesting from energetic point of view) could be considered from a point of view of modern fracture mechanics. Cutting...
